National Champion HPU Softball To Play In Tournament Of Champions

Honolulu, HI (12/6/10) – The HPU softball team will once again be participating in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, California. The tournament field was announced today by Cal State Stanislaus.

The tournament field is comprised of 22 teams from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Pacific West Conference and run from April 1-3. The Lady Sea Warriors will be joined in group play by Dominican University, Grand Canyon, Montana State-Billings, and Western Oregon.

HPU, who enters the tournament as the defending NCAA National Champions, have boasted recent success in Turlock. In 2009, the Lady Sea Warriors won the championship for the first time then last year fell in the semifinals to Central Washington. HPU would go on to defeat the Wildcats one month later in the NCAA West Region final.

Per the tournament schedule, HPU and its Pool D members will play all their games against the Pool C teams. The Sea Warriors will take on UC-San Diego, Chico State, and host Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, then complete pool play on Saturday with games against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay. HPU and Chico State will meet for the first time since last year’s NCAA Super Regional where the Sea Warriors topped the Wildcats to advance to the College World Series.

HPU opens the 2011 season Thursday, February 2, against Gustavus Adolphus College.
