Late Goal Lifts Sonoma State to CCAA Championship Title Match

TURLOCK, Calif- Taylor Varnadore scored a header goal with just under two minutes remaining in regulation to defeat top-seeded Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 in the semifinal of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Tournament Friday at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

The Seawolves advance to the championship match for the fourth straight year and will face the winner of Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills, that begins at 1:30 p.m.

Sonoma State (13-5-1) will be in search of its third conference championship when it returns to the pitch at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Seawolves' previous titles came in 2005 and 2008.

Cal State San Barnadino, ranked No. 6 in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) poll fell to 13-5-1. The Coyotes, ranked No. 1 in the West Region, are expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In an evenly played contest, Cal State San Bernardino held a slight 19-17 shot advantage. Both teams had eight shots on-goal.

The Seawolves took advantage of the contest's last scoring opportunity, when Frank Becerril and Cam Vickers assisted Varnadore on the game-winner at the 88:10 mark.
