ASC has four first teamers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Adams State College football team had four first team and eight overall selections to the 2010 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squad announced Tuesday afternoon by conference officials.

Senior cornerback Bryant Williams (Mesa, Ariz.), now a 3-time overall All-RMAC selection, junior middle linebacker Rocco DeLorenzo (Arvada, Colo.), sophomore rover James Ackel (Riverside, Calif.), selected at the outside linebacker position and sophomore Scott Kellogg (Littleton, Colo.), tabbed at the punt return position were the Grizzlies' first team selections.

Junior running back Terjean Saffold (Stockton, Calif.) and sophomore offensive lineman Kevin Ashak (Mesa, Ariz.) were the Grizzlies' two second team selections while junior wide receiver Delton Prescott, Jr. (Phoenix, Ariz.) and senior offensive lineman Jeff Younker (Rosenberg, Texas) represent the Grizzlies on the third team.

All of the awards were determined by a vote of the conference's 10 head coaches, who could not vote for their own players.
Williams, who led the RMAC with 13 pass breakups this season, was the Grizzlies' repeat selection although Ackel was tabbed as the RMAC's Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2009.

Williams had been a Third Team All-RMAC selection at rover in each of the last two years after transferring from fellow NCAA Division II Truman State (Mo.), where he played in 2007.   Moved to cornerback for this season, Williams recorded 48 tackles, including 21 solo stops, and had two interceptions.

He and Ackel, who were tied for the RMAC lead with 15 total pass breakups, also anchored the Grizzly secondary which led the RMAC while ranking ninth in the NCAA Division II statistics for pass defense efficiency (99.03).  The Grizzlies were also ranked second in the RMAC for total defense, giving up just 315.7 yards per game.

In addition to his 12 pass breakups, Ackel recorded 82 total tackles, including a team-high 36 solos.   He was also tied for the RMAC lead with Defensive Player of the Year Marc Schiechl of Colorado Mines in forced fumbles with five and was tied for third in the conference with three fumble recoveries.  He ranked ninth in the RMAC for total tackles and added 4.5 for losses totaling 30 yards while recording a co-team high three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

DeLorenzo, who along with Williams, was a Preseason All-RMAC selection, led the Grizzly squad with 99 total tackles and was a RMAC and D2Football.com Defensive Player of the Week after his 17-tackle effort against Mesa State on Nov. 6.  Finishing second in the conference in total tackles, DeLorenzo also had two interceptions, a fumble recovery and had 6.0 tackles for losses.

Kellogg led the RMAC and ranks fifth in the NCAA statistics with his 17.6-yard punt return average.  Kellogg also ranked second in the RMAC with his 26.1 yard per kick return average and tallied 1,327 all-purpose yards this season, the most for any Grizzly since 1997.  He also led the Grizzlies with 540 receiving yards and was tied for the team lead with Prescott, Jr. for total receptions (48) and with Saffold for receiving touchdowns.

Saffold was a scoring machine in 2010 scoring nine rushing and 12 total touchdowns, the most for any ASC player since all-America receiver Chris Perry in 1995.  Ranking fourth in the RMAC for overall scoring with his 72 points, Saffold rushed for 612 yards averaging 4.5 yards per tote despite missing two entire games and portions of two others due to injury.  Ranked fifth in the RMAC with his 68.0 yard per game average, he had four 100-yard games during the season and had two 4-touchdown games.

Prescott, Jr. racked up 504 receiving yards and two scores on his 48 total receptions, 22 of which came in the last three games of the season.  He and Kellogg were tied for ninth in the RMAC for total receptions.  Prescott was 10th in receiving yards, one spot below Kellogg.

Ashak, the Grizzlies' right guard, and Younker, who saw time as both a guard and tackle both started all 11 games for the Grizzlies and helped block for 100-yard rushers in five different games and for sophomore quarterback Trevor Eggleston (Tucson, Ariz.), who finished fourth in the RMAC for total offense.

The Grizzlies, who won their last two and four of their last six games, completed the season with 5-6 overall and 4-5 RMAC marks and finished amongst the top half of the RMAC for the third straight year with their fifth place finish.  Four of the Grizzlies' five RMAC losses were by 11 or fewer points.
