GBC Volleyball Falls 3-1 on Senior Night

PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team lost to crosstown rival Wilmington University, 3-1 on Senior Night, Thurs. in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Joseph West Jones Center. Graduating seniors A.J. Hicks and Lauren Witzke were honored before the game.

The Lightning (8-19, 2-16 CACC) lost the first set 25-19, came back to win set two, 25-17, then dropped sets three and four by the identical score of 25-14. Wilmington, who came into tonight third in the conference standings, improved to 21-11 overall and 13-5 in league play.

Hicks and Witzke both impressed from their defensive positions tonight, both posting double-figures in the dig column. Hicks, who entered the match with 951 career digs, tied her season-high with 25 digs on the night. Witzke was just one dig short of tying her career-high for the third time this year as she pitched in with 10.

Junior middle hitter Rebecca Stoffer led the team offensively with eight kills on 22 swings. She was ninth in the conference in hitting percentage coming in, and hit .227 for the night. Junior Roni Shaner and sophomore Monica Dempsey added six kills and 14 assists apiece, while Dempsey also contributed 17 digs. Junior Amanda Mills pitched in with a season-high five kills on 10 attempts (.300 hitting percentage).

The Wildcats were led by Nicole Wiechecki, who blasted 18 kills to go with just three errors on 39 attempts (.385 htiting percentage). Wiechecki, who ranks sixth in the league in kills with 2.85 per set, had eight kills in just the first set, and in the third set, her first six attempts all landed for kills.

Brittany Biddle (second in the CACC in hitting percentage, .284) and Meghan Frick added eight kills apiece and Shannon Rumple directed the offense with 29 assists. Kim Shropshire led the defensive effort with 16 digs.

GBC concludes its season with a trip to CACC foe Dominican on Sat., Nov. 6. The match begins at 12 p.m.
