Oilers Fall Short Against Flyers

The University of Findlay men’s basketball team, ranked third in the initial National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II poll, lost 85-68 to the University of Dayton on Saturday, November 6 in an exhibition game at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half as the Oilers and Flyers were playing tremendous defense. After holding the lead for the majority of the period, the Oilers found themselves down 31-28 with only four seconds remaining when senior guard Nathan Hyde rebounded a missed free throw, raced down the floor and connected on a three pointer to tie the score a 31-31 as the buzzer sounded.

In the first half, the Oilers connected on 37.5 percent (9-of-24) of their shots and held the Flyers to a 33.3 percent (9-of-27) shooting clip.

During the second half, both teams shot the ball better than they did in the first, but the Flyers began to pound the boards and get second chance shot opportunities. The extra shots, and numerous trips to the free throw line, allowed the Flyers to build a lead, which ultimately was too much for the Oilers to overcome on the evening.

Individually, Hyde scored a game-high 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Hyde connected on 4-of-9 shots from behind the three point line and also tallied a team-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard Aaron Robinson contributed 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting while junior guard Kyle Caiola chipped in seven points, three rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Flyers were led by Josh Parker’s 13 points.

As a team, the Oilers shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor while the Flyers hit 48.1 percent (26-of-54) of their attempts.

The Flyers also held a 39-28 advantage on the boards and forced 17 Findlay turnovers.

Juwan Staten, Chris Johnson and Paul Williams each contributed 12 for Dayton as well.

The Oilers will open the regular season at home on November 12 against Wilberforce. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
