EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman kicker Taylor Groff has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after setting the school record with his 16th field goal of the season in Saturday’s season finale at Edinboro.
Groff (Manheim/Manheim Central) was one of two kickers in Division II to make at least one field goal in every game of the 2010 season, joining Gareth Rowlands of Tusculum (Tenn.). Groff also ranked 10th in the nation in points per game by a kicker in the regular season, and his 87 points are the second-most by a kicker in school history.
The freshman was 16-for-21 on field goals and was a perfect 12-for-12 under 40 yards. He set the record with a 36-yard field goal with 7:31 left in the second quarter on Saturday to give ESU a 17-14 lead in a game that Edinboro eventually won, 28-25. He also connected on 39-of-41 extra points.
He was 4-for-4 under 30 yards, 8-for-8 between 30 and 39 yards, 4-for-8 from 40 to 49 yards and 0-for-1 over 50 yards – a 58-yard attempt at C.W. Post. He had three games with two field goals and made three against Cheyney. His season long of 48 came at the end of the first half vs. Kutztown, and he hit a 45-yarder to bring ESU within 21-20 at halftime at California (Pa.) in the third game of the season.
Groff came to ESU as a first team All-State kicker on the AAA runner-up team at Manheim Central. He made 11 field goals and 56 extra points as a high school senior.
