BURNABY, B.C. – A double-double from senior Kayla Ryan and 18 points from senior Beata Bak sparked Montana State Billings to a 66-59 road win at Simon Fraser University in both team’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference openers Thursday evening. With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference play, while SFU fell to 3-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
“It was a great win for us tonight,” MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin said. “I thought our senior class stepped up and played with a lot of heart and determination and set the tone for us. I thought Kayla Ryan was solid all night long on both ends of the floor. Mandy Jacobs and Sarah McNamee played very well on both ends. It was a total team effort. We are really happy to get this win tonight as it has been a difficult couple of weeks of travel, so I am really proud of the way we competed.”
Ryan led the team with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games. Bak chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior Sarah McNamee added 11 points. The Clan was led by Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. No other SFU player was in double figures scoring.
The Yellowjackets shot 38.9 percent from the field on 21 of 54 from the floor. MSUB was 6 of 16 from range and 18 of 25 from the line. The Jackets pulled down 37 rebounds. Conversely, SFU shot 34.9 percent in its first home game of the season. The Clan was 22 of 63 from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc shooting just 4 of 27 from deep. SFU was 11 of 16 from the line and had 38 rebounds.
Both teams committed 14 turnovers in the game, but a key difference was MSUB led 16-6 in points off turnovers.
A layup by senior Shantell Marquis gave the Jackets an early 5-4 lead, before SFU regained the lead and built the lead to as many as six points for a majority of the first half. A triple by McNamee cut the deficit to 22-21 with 7:41, followed by another McNamee triple at 5:38 to give the Jackets their first lead at 26-24 since early in the game. MSUB held the lead for the rest of the half and went into intermission with a 32-28 advantage.
The Clan erased the deficit early in the second half capped by a layup from Raincock-Ekunwe at the 16:03 mark for a 36-36 score. From there, MSUB regained the lead and built a 53-43 lead with a 17-7 run over the next 6:24, capped by a jumper from senior Mandy Jacobs. The run started with a big triple from junior Kalli Stanhope with the gamed tied at 36 with 16:03 left.
“I felt we had a nice push midway through the second half as the game was tied after we had a small lead at halftime to give us some breathing room,” Woodin added.
Bak nailed a triple with 5:23 remaining to put the Yellowjackets back up double digits at 58-47 as the Clan began a mini run.
SFU got the game within five points in the final minute, but the Jackets made 4 of 6 charity tosses in the final 33 seconds to secure the win.
MSUB returns to the states and a trip to nationally ranked Western Washington Saturday at 7 p.m. local time. Following the game, the Yellowjackets return home to begin a five-game home stand against cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Alterowitz Gymnasium.
