Taylor Cannon Receives Third Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award

PORTALES, N.M. — Junior placekicker Taylor Cannon (Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University football team was one of 42 players selected for the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award for his performance during the month of October for the 2010 season. The Award was named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipients of the Fred Mitchell Award are chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community.

Of the 42 kickers selected, 13 were from NCAA Division II schools, while 13 were from FCS schools, 10 from Division III schools, and six from NAIA institutions. The selection was the third time Cannon was a recipient of the prestigious award. He also was honored last month and last September.

Cannon has been active in the community, participating in visiting schools in nearby Floyd, N.M., as part of Dr. Seuss Day, reading to young students. He also has been extremely active on the gridiron, ranking 27th in the NCAA Division II in field goals and seventh in the Lone Star Conference in scoring, with 7.22 points per game (65 points overall).

Cannon leads the Greyhounds in scoring, with 65 points, on nine-of-13 on field goals and 38-for-39 on point after touchdowns. In the month of October, he scored 27 points, connecting on 18-of-19 PATs and three of five field goals, including a career-best 43-yarrd field goal against Southwestern Oklahoma State. He also had a punt of at least 50 yards on four of the five games during the month.

Cannon and the Eastern New Mexico University football team will continue their LSC North schedule on Saturday, when visit Northeastern State, in Weatherford, Okla. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. MST.
