Zias Fall in LSC Crossover to Bulldogs

Portales, N.M.- The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (1-4) dropped a 77-66 decision to Southwestern Oklahoma University (5-0) in Lone Star Conference Crossover action, Thursday night at Greyhound Arena. Junior guard Kiara Tate (Chicago, Ill./Southwood HS/McLennan CC) poured in a career-high 18 points, and dished out five assists. Tate scored 13 points in the opening half.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-10 lead before trading baskets to retain the 18-point margin, but Karen Grant’s (Jr., G, Lubbock, Texas/Estacado HS) free throw, followed by five consecutive points from Krista Ford (So., G, Lubbock, Texas/Frenship HS) sparked an 11-3 Zia run over the next 4:31, allowing Eastern to pull within 36-26, with 2:28 left in the half. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 41-26 at intermission.

Southwestern Oklahoma continued to hold the momentum early in the second half, seizing a 16-point edge, 49-33, with 15:04 left, when Precious Herrin’s (Jr., F, Shreveport, La./Southwood HS/Jacksonville College) short jumper ignited a 23-5 Zia run over the next 6:56. The Zias had their first lead since Cat Clay’s (Sr., F, Deming, N.M./Deming HS) opening three pointer with 7:54 remaining in the second half when a layup from Herrin made the score 55-54.  After Tate hit a free throw for a two-point lead, SWOSU’s Ashley Rush answered right back with a coast-to-coast bucket from outside the arc, giving the Bulldogs the lead for good, 57-56, with 7:12 left..

After shooting 25.7 percent in the first half, the Zias shot 43.3 percent over the final 20 minutes and received a total of 24 points off the bench. Tate also finished with four rebounds and four steals, while Herrin and Ford scored 10 points apiece. Clay scored nine points and blocked a shot, pushing her career-scoring total to 946 points. Shanessa Smith paced SWOSU offensively, with 20 points and three assists.

The Zias will continue their LSC Crossover schedule, when take on Cameron University, Saturday, December 4th at 2 p.m.
