Hot shooting Knights pick up first win

COLUMBIA, S.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s basketball team shot 57.1-percent in the second half to rally from a halftime deficit and defeat host Allen University 85-80 on Tuesday evening.

Six Knights scored at least 10 points as St. Andrews (1-3) picked up its first win of the season, while handing the Yellow Jackets (5-2) their first home loss.

“We had a number of guys produce offensively but I’m most proud of our team for reaching our rebounding goal and finding a way to close out this game,” said SAPC third year head coach Richie Schueler.

Junior Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Knights offensive barrage with 18 points on 6-of-8 precision as the victors wound up shooting a season-best 52.5% (31-for-59) from the field.

SAPC jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes and held a single digit advantage for majority of the period. Junior Michael Dunkins (Candor, N.C.) sank his team-best second three-pointer with 9:13 showing on the clock to give the Royal Blue and White its largest lead of the half at 29-20.

Allen rallied with a 20-7 run to take a narrow 42-40 lead into the locker room. The Yellow Jackets held a 22-19 edge on the glass and scored 11 of its 19 second chance points by the intermission. Moffitt kept the visitors within striking distance scoring 12 of his 18 points in the first half.

The Knights answered by sizzling the nets for 16-of-28 marksmanship and a dominating the backboards, 18-10, in the final 20 minutes. Senior Marvin Jackson (Gloucester, Va.) flirted with a double-double and helped pace St. Andrews comeback by scoring nine of his 11 points and grabbing five of his nine boards in the second stanza.

St. Andrews broke away from a 54-54 tie with a 12-2 outburst. The run was highlighted by back-to-back drilled three-pointers by Christian and junior Chris Sumski (Charlotte, N.C.) before junior Ryan Streater (Charlotte, N.C.) capped it off with a made shot in the paint as SAPC maintained its biggest lead of night, 66-56, with nine minutes left.

Allen pulled to within three as the clock dipped under five minutes but junior Ross Williams (Washington, D.C.) scored the next four points and St. Andrews sealed the victory with its hot shooting. The Knights made four of its final six shot attempts and 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch.

Schueler added, “As a team we made some critical errors, but we plan to use them as learning experiences as we move forward. We’re still trying to mold this group together.”

Junior Aaron Christian (New Bedford, Mass.) swished 14 points and set up the Knights offense with a game-high six assists. Williams followed with 12 points and two helpers. Jackson and Streater both dropped in 11 points and Dunkins cashed in 10 points. Sumski scored all five of his points in the second half as the Knights reserves outscored Allen’s bench 28-4.

The Knights finished with a 37-32 rebounding advantage with senior Marcus Connor (Charlotte, N.C.) snaring a game-high 11 boards. Connor also had four blocks and four points.

SAPC protected the ball better committing a season-low 16 turnovers.

After the Thanksgiving break, St. Andrews will finally host its home opener as the Knights entertain the Apprentice School Builders on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
