Three UWF Volleyball Players Named to the Daktronics All-South Region Volleyball Second Team

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – University of West Florida volleyball seniors Katie Johnson and Chelsea Wilhoite and sophomore Anna Stoecklein have been named to the Daktronics All-South Regional Volleyball Second Team. This is the first Daktronics award for all three Argos while at UWF.

Arkansas Tech, Tampa and West Florida each had three players earn all-region honors. Barry University outside hitter Julie Teixeria was named the South Region Player of the Year. All members of the first team are eligible for the 2010 Daktronics All-American volleyball team.

Outside hitter Katie Johnson (Tallahassee) earned her first Daktronics all-region award after her only season at UWF. The senior tallied 436 kills for the 2010 season and was named to the Comfort Inn-vitational all-tournament team and the 2010 Gulf South Conference (GSC) Top Newcomers List. She also earned the GSC East Offensive Player of the Week award three times and was once the recipient of the GSC East Defensive Player of the Week award. Johnson capped her senior season by being named the GSC East Division Player of the year and was a member of the GSC All-Tournament Team. This past weekend, Johnson was named to the all-tournament team at the NCAA South Regional in Tampa.

Chelsea Wilhoite (Jacksonville), a senior outside hitter, received second team accolades after capping her UWF career with a strong senior season. During the regular season, Wilhoite received three GSC East Division Offensive Player of the Week honors and one GSC East Division Defensive Player of the Week honor. She was named to the All-GSC First-Team in 2009 and 2010 and was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2010 GSC Championships in Pensacola. Wilhoite finishes her career with 1,291 kills, which ranks second all-time in the UWF school records. She also tops the UWF record books with 466 sets played in her career.

Sophomore libero Anna Stoecklein (St. Charles, Mo.) was named the MVP at the 2010 Comfort Inn-vitational. She tied a school record with 30 digs in the four-set match against Harding in the GSC Championships. In her first year as an Argo, Stoecklein finished the season 10th in the GSC in digs, averaging 3.91 digs per game.

The University of West Florida volleyball team advanced to the NCAA South Regional finals and finished the season with an overall record of 30-7. UWF captured its fourth straight GSC East Division title and won the GSC Championships for the third straight year. The 2010 team was only the second UWF volleyball team ever to advance to the NCAA South Regional finals.
