Gannon Women's Basketball Program Signs Two Student-Athletes for 2011-12 Season

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon head women’s basketball coach Cleve Wright announced the signing of Antoinette “Nettie” Blake (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist) and Candice Hendricks (Randallstown, Md. / McDonogh) during the NCAA’s early signing period.

“We are excited about Candice and Nettie’s commitment to Gannon,” said Wright. “Both of these young ladies have the ability and character to be impact players.”

Blake helped Marist (N.J.) High School to a 2008 County and Northern State championship. The 6-foot-2 post is a two-time Tri-County Conference second-team selection. She was also selected to the all-county third team by the Newark Star-Ledger. She averaged 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds, shooting 67 percent from the field for Marist. Blake was also an all-county second-team selection in softball and an Inner-City Children Scholar-Athlete four times.

“Nettie is a strong physical post player who has a great presence on the block,” noted Wright. “She has good size and with her finishing ability around the basket she will really help our inside game.”

Hendricks averaged 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds while shoooting 42.7 percent from the field as a junior at McDonogh (Md.) High School. In addition she nailed 35 percent of her long-range shots. The 5-foot-10 guard is an all-conference first-team selection. Hendricks was also named tournament MVP at the Hilton Resort Classic after scoring 30 points in the championship game. As a sophomore she averaged 9.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.

“Candice is a versatile perimeter player who can score from the three-point line and distribute the ball effectively to her teammates,” said Wright. One of the skills I’m most excited about is her ability to rebound the ball.”

The Lady Knights kick off the 2010-11 regular season at the Ferris State Tournament on Saturday, November 20 and Sunday November 21, taking on Northwood and Ferris State.
