ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba’s Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) has been named to the 2010 South Atlantic Conference Volleyball All-SAC Team. The sophomore earned second team honors. It was announced by the league on Thursday.
Whitmer has tallied a team-high 282 kills this season, an average of just over three per set. She has added 287 digs, 38 blocks and 15 aces. Catawba opens SAC Tournament play on Friday and stands seventh in the most recent Southeast Region poll as it tries to qualify for NCAA II post-season play for a third straigth season.
Stormie Gale, who led the league in hitting percentage and helped Wingate to a fourth straight undefeated season in conference play and fifth straight conference championship, was named the SAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Tusculum setter Ashley Sarmiento, who led the conference with 10.37 assists per set, was named the Freshman of the Year.
Wingate’s Shelton Collier and Tusculum’s Michael Robinson shared league Coach of the Year honors. Collier earned the honor for the fourth year in a row, while Robinson, who guided the Pioneers to a second-place finish, wins for the first time in his career.
Anderson senior Jamie Lancaster received the Scholar-Athlete Award for volleyball. The outside hitter has maintained a 4.0 grade point average, majoring in kinesiology. This season, she averaged 3.82 kills per set, second-best in the conference, and ranked in the top 10 in hitting percentage and digs.
