Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball Edges UNC Pembroke, 64-62 to Earn Second-Straight Win

Belmont Abbey sophomore guard Terrone Sheffey gave the Abbey a two-point lead with a free throw with ten seconds left, and UNC Pembroke's final three-point attempt fell off the rim as the Crusaders moved to 2-0 with a 64-62 win over the Braves this evening at the Wheeler Center. UNC Pembroke falls to 1-1 in the loss.

Sheffey and Kyle Phillips both led the Abbey with 14 points apiece, while Tyshawn Good added ten. Jay Council added nine points, while Richard Barbee contributed eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Barbee and Sheffey both handed out five assists. Belmont Abbey shot 38.6 percent (22-57) from the floor.

UNC Pembroke was led by George Blakeney's 11 points, while K.J. Cooper and Ty Alston both had ten. The Braves shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field.

Tied at 60 with 1:25 left, the Crusaders moved ahead by three on a layup from Phillips and a Barbee free throw. Nate Priest pulled the Braves back to one at 63-62 with ten seconds left, but the Braves would not score again.

After Sheffey was fouled, he missed the front end of a two shot free throw attempt, but sank the second to move the Abbey up by two, 64-62. With two seconds left, Alston fired a three-point attempt from just left of the top of the key, but his shot drew iron.
