Women's Basketball: Zack Sets GNAC Offensive Rebound Record In Victory

Dara Zack had 20 rebounds, including a GNAC single-game record 12 at the offensive end, to lead Saint Martin's to a 53-50 win over Central Washington Thursday at Marcus Pavilion.

Meanwhile, Montana State Billings handed Simon Fraser its first home loss since 2008 defeating the Clan 66-59 at Burnaby.

The game's were the 2010-11 Great Northwest Athletic conference openers for all four schools.

Zack, who came into the game averaging just five rebounds per game, also had 14 points, including 10 in the second half when she snagged 15 of her caroms.

The Saints, who trailed 24-20 at the break, also got 19 points on six of 10 shooting by Roni Jo Mielke as they improved to 5-2. CWU fell to 3-1.

Central was led by Stacy Albrecht with 15 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Kelsi Jacobson had 11 points. The Wildcats had eight total blocks compared to one by SMU.

Central Washington had the largest lead of the game at 22-15, but the Saints closed the first half with a 5-2 run, then scored the first eight points of the second period to go ahead 28-24.

Central answered with a 8-0 run of its own, but later the Saints took the lead for good outscoring CWU 10-4. SMU's biggest lead was five, a margin it acquired for the second time on two free throws by Destiny Schang with 56 seconds left.

The Wildcats pulled to within one point on a pair of baskets by Albrecht with 44 and nine seconds left. Sophie Russell then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled.

Russell, however, missed two free throws. Zack got the rebound and CWU quickly fouled her. Zack also missed twice, however, she grabbed her 20th rebound - the eighth player in GNAC history to reach that plateau -and Mielke then sank two free throws for the final points.

Montana State Billings 66, Simon Fraser 59

Beata Bak scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half after Kayla Ryan had 14 of her 18 in the first half as Montana State Billings leveled its overall record at 3-3.

MSUB also was led by Sarah McNamee with 11. McNamee had a three-pointer with 5:38 remaining in the first half to give the Yellowjackets a 26-24 after it trailed 16-10 in the early moments.

Simon Fraser, which hadn't lost at home since 2008, trailed 32-28 at the break. The Clan did come back to earn a 36-36 tie before Kalli Stanhope put MSUB ahead for good at 39-36 with her only field goal of the game at the 15:36 mark of the second half.

The 'Jackets later used a 7-0 run to go ahead 48-40 and eventually opened up an 11-point lead.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe was the only player in double figures for Simon Fraser earning her fourth double-double in five games. She had 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Simon Fraser shot just 34.9 percent (22-63), including just four of 27 from the three-point line. In addition to her 18 points, Ryan led MSUB with 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Men's Basketball: Vikings, Saints Open With Victories

Guard Shedrick Nelson came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points as Western Washington defeated Montana State Billings 90-82 at Sam Carver Gymnasium in one of two conference games Thursday night in the GNAC.

Saint Martin's also opened its conference schedule with a 67-49 home win against Northwest Nazarene as Jeremy Green and Blake Poole led Saints with 17 points and four steals apiece.

In a non-conference game, Kyle Long had his second 30-point plus performance of the season scoring 32 in a 99-66 win over Multnomah.

Forward Michael Duty scored 18 points in Western Washington's home victory as the Vikings (5-1) recorded their fourth consecutive victory since losing to Dixie State.

The Vikings also got double-figure scoring from John Allen with 12 points and Rory Blanche and Chris Mitchell with 11 each.

Forward Raason Young had a game-high 23 points and guard DeAndre Chambers added 18 to lead MSU Billings (1-4).

The Vikings took the lead for good midway through the first half, using a 12-3 run to take a 21-13 advantage with nine minutes remaining. Western held a 42-29 lead at halftime.

The Vikings led by as much as 17 in the second half.  MSUB chipped away, closing to within five (83-78) on a putback by Kenneth Anderson with 1:10 left, but Western made seven of eight free throws in the final 50 seconds to seal the victory.

Saint Martin's 67, Northwest Nazarene 49

Saint Martin's (6-2) overcame early eight-point deficits of 12-4 and 18-10, outscoring Northwest Nazarene 18-3 over one stretch in the second half in its victory.

Green and Poole keyed that surge that turned a 32-30 Saint lead into a 50-33 advantage with 11:25 remaining. Green had seven of the points and Poole, who scored 13 in the second period, had six including the final five.

Also scoring in double figures for the Saints was Galen Squiers with 13 points. Green and Poole had seven and six rebounds for SMU though the Saints were outrebounded 29-24 by NNU even though no player had more than four for the Crusaders.

Jamie Elsinger was the only player in double figures for NNU with 12 points. After shooting 52.4 percent (11-21) in the first 20 minutes, the Crusaders made only seven of 23 in the second period when they were outscored 38-23.

The Saints overcame a 10 of 24 start (41.7) to shoot 54.2 percent (13-24) in the second period. They made nine of 14 treys, five of seven after the break.

Western Oregon 99, Multnomah 66

Kyle Long missed only three shots - all from beyond the three-point line- in leading Western Oregon to a 33-point win.

Long tallied 32 points on 13 of 16 shooting, including six of nine three-pointers to lead five players in double figures. He also had five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Kris White had 15 points and Blair Wheadon, Tarance Glynn and Jordan Freelander all scored 10. Glynn - along with DeAngelo Davis who had a game-high nine rebounds - led WOU to a 52-33 domination of the backboards grabbing seven.

Wheadon had eight of Western Oregon's 18 assists and also led the Wolves (3-4) with three steals.

Mike Woodard and Gian Cook paced Multnomah (3-5) with 14 points each. Jacob Fischer had 12 and Steven Bustrin scored 11.

Soccer: Twelve Named To NSCAA All-Region Team

Three Seattle Pacific players - forward Megan Lindsey, midfielder Kelsey Jenkins and defender Taylor Sawyer - have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association NCAA Division II West Region women's all-star team.

They were among 12 GNAC players selected, including three to the second team and six to the third team. Seattle Pacific had a total of five, including two third-team picks. MSU Billings placed two players on the second team and two on the third team.

Western Washington had two all-star selections, one on the second and one on the third team, while Saint Martin's had one player named to the third team.
