Baptiste Named Linebacker of the Year

RICHARDSON, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville senior Tressor Baptiste (New York, NY/Curtis HS) was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Linebacker of the Year on Wednesday when LSC officials announced the annual football awards.
      
Baptiste headlined a group of 14 Javelina players named to the first or seconds teams in the division.  He had 55 tackles and 8.0 tackles for loss on the season while leading a defensive unit that is #1 in the nation against the run, #4 in overall defense, #7 in scoring defense and #15 in pass efficiency defense.
      
Joining Baptiste on the LSC South First Team defense were junior defensive tackle Johnny Tivao (Compton, CA/Paramount HS), senior safety Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) and senior safety DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS).  Tivao had 23 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble on the season.  Robertson earned LSC South Second Team honors last year and had 52 tackles, two interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble return for a touchdown this year.  Glover also earned Second Team honors last year and had 58 tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions this year.
      
The Javelina offense did not have a single First Team honoree, but did have five players named to the Second Team.  Sophomore running back Jonathon Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) only started the final five games of the year, but still managed to lead the team with 553 yards rushing on 5.3 yards per carry and seven touchdowns.  He added 26 catches for 240 yards and a touchdown.  Senior wide receiver Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) earned his third straight Second Team honor after leading the team with 60 catches for 739 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 170 yards and four touchdowns.  Senior offensive linemen Colby Lowrie (Sweeny/Sweeny HS) and Trent Perkins (Alice/Alice HS) led an offense that averaged 392 yards and had only 17 sacks allowed.  Senior place kicker Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) earned Honorable Mention honors last year and had a fantastic year connecting on 13-of-19 field goals while leading the team with 74 points.
      
The Hoggie defense had five more players earn LSC South Second Team honors.  Sophomore defensive end Matt Romig (Bells/Bells HS) earned Honorable Mention honors last year and compiled a team high 8.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks despite playing only eight games during the season.  Junior linebacker Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) leads the team with 72 tackles along with 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks.  Junior corner back Derrick Thomas (San Antonio/Jay HS) earned Honorable Mention honors as a freshman and has 34 tackles, an interception and a team high nine pass breakups this year.

Junior safety Kendrick Matthews (Houston/Marshall HS) had 32 tackles 2.5 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups this year.  Freshman Derek Tesch (Blanco/Blanco HS) earned Second Team honors as a deep snapper.
      
The Javelinas had six other players earn Honorable Mention honors.  They are freshman wide receiver Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS), sophomore wide receiver Sherman Batiste (Fort Bend/Marshall HS), senior center Tim Byerly (Victoria/Memorial HS), junior punt returner Arron Fisher (Orlando, FL/West Orange HS), sophomore kick returner Jonathon Woodson and senior defensive tackle Dondi Cooks (Dallas/North Mesquite HS).
