UCSD Topped By UC Santa Barbara in Dual Meet

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara topped the UC San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams Saturday by respective scores of 161.5-137.5 and 175.5-118.5, with the Tritons performing particularly well in the diving events. UCSD would win nine events on the afternoon- four by the men’s team and five on the women’s side.

On the men’s side, UCSD redshirt freshman Nick Korth continued a stellar start to his collegiate swimming career, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.95. UCSD occupied the top four spots in the 100 free, with Griffin Bracke (59.43), See Lee (59.94) and Mark Guyler (1:02.52) following their UCSD counterpart. Korth would win the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.75, two seconds faster than his nearest competitor. Matt Herman and Chris Baier would finish in second and third place in the 1000 free, finishing with times of 9:35.57 and 9:50.36, respectively.

Triton divers enjoyed a solid outing, as UCSD finished one-two-three in both of the men’s diving events. Tyler Runsten won the one-meter competition after posting 336.60 points. Patrick Cohen took home the men’s three-meter dive, scoring 304.80 points, four better than Runsten.

On the women’s side, Anji Shakya finished first in the 200 free (1:53.38) and 200 backstroke (2:07.28). All-American Alex Henley won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:08.56 and finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:06.45) and 1000 free (10:27.76).

The Triton divers on the women’s side also enjoyed a successful afternoon, taking home both the one-meter and three-meter events. Mishka Hulka took first in the one-meter with a score of 218.03, less than two points higher than her teammate, Jamie Pearce. Pearce would get some friendly revenge in the three-meter competition, scoring 238.38 points to Hulka’s 235.43,

The UCSD women’s swimming and diving team will be back in action next Saturday, November 13, at the University of San Diego. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.

The Triton men return to the pool in two weeks at the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Nov. 18-20. The Arena Invitational is an all day event.
