Gridiron Greyhounds Fall in LSC North Overtime Shootout at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, OKLA.— Junior placekicker Taylor Cannon (Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) staked the Eastern New Mexico University football team (4-6; LSC North 3-3) to a 40-37 overtime lead with a 19-yard field goal, but the Greyhounds dropped a 43-40 heartbreaker to Northeastern State (6-4; LSC North 5-1) in Lone Star Conference North Division action, Saturday afternoon at Wadley Stadium. Senior defensive end Matt Kalisch (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights HS/NMMI) was bearing down on NSU quarterback Trey McVay, on the final play, which resulted in a 30-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Davis.

Three of Eastern’s four road losses this season were decided by a total of nine points. The Hounds other road loss was by 11 points at Southwestern Oklahoma State. The overtime game was the first time the Hounds went to an extra session, since a 28-21 loss to Angelo State, on October 6, 2007.  Eastern blocked two kicks for the first time since the 2009 season opener at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Northeastern State took a 37-27 lead just 48 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Eastern followed with a nine-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a 31-yard touchdown reception from Jessie Poku (Sr., WR, Murphy, Texas/Richardson HS). On their ensuing possession, the Riverhawks drove into the red zone, but Bracy McCoy (So., DE, Freeport, Texas/Brazosport HS) and Curtis Jackson (Jr., CB, College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated HS) stopped running back Josh Lewis at the ENMU two-yard line on fourth down. After the teams exchanged punts, the Hounds received their final regulation possession at their own 20-yard line with 3:39 left. ENMU converted two third downs on the possession, including a third and 19, which saw Wesley Wood (So., QB, Muleshoe, Texas/Muleshoe HS) hit Poku for a 25-yard gain. On third and goal from the NSU three-yard line, Wood appeared to hit Tony Valenzuela (Sr., RB, Seagraves, Texas/Seagraves HS) with the game-winning touchdown as time expired, but the play was not allowed, as Eastern was called for illegal procedure. The penalty allowed Cannon to come on the field and hit his third field goal of the game, coming from 23-yards to tie the score at 37-all and send the contest to overtime.

In five plays, the Greyhounds drove to the Northeastern State two-yard line, taking their first lead since late in the second quarter, on a 19-yard Cannon field goal. After being called from a false start, the Riverhawks scored on their first play of the overtime period, with McVay hitting Davis from 30-yards out.

After the Hounds took a 3-0 lead 1:45 into the game on a 29-yard field goal, Ben Randle hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass to give NSU a 7-3 lead. Wood scored on a QB-keeper from one-yard out, 1:16 into the second quarter to give Eastern a 10-7 lead and Cannon hit a 30-yard field goal to extend Eastern’s lead, before McVay found Davis from 22-yards out with 46 seconds left in the half for a 15-13 lead at intermission. The teams exchanged scores in throughout the third quarter.

Eastern rushed for 152 yards, marking the sixth time in the last seven games, they have reached the century mark, while the Riverhawks finished with 155 yards on the ground. Northeastern held a 36:17-23:43 edge in time of possession in the game. Eastern converted on one of their two two-point attempts after touchdowns, while NSU connected on all three of theirs. Poku tied his season-high with 12 catches for a season-high 180 yards. Darian Dale (Jr., WR, Bay City, Texas/Bay City HS) caught seven passes for 109 yards and a score. Cannon hit a field goal in every period but the third quarter, falling just two shy of his record of six, set against Southeastern Oklahoma last season. Valenzuela registered the second 100-yard game of his career, running for 101 yards on 27 carries. Perron Sellers (Jr., LB, La Marque, Texas/La Marque HS/Fullerton JC) made a career-high 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops and forced a fumble, while Curtis Jackson also matched a career-best 15 tackles with nine solos. Nathan Uland (Sr., LB, Denton, Texas/Ryan HS) made 13 tackles, while Kalisch finished with eight tackles, a sack, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery.

The Eastern New Mexico University football team will conclude their 2010 season, next Saturday at Tarleton State. The LSC Crossover game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. MST kick off.
