Columbus State Ahead in Commissioner’s Cup Standings Following Fall Sports

AUGUSTA – Columbus State University has jumped out to an early lead as the Peach Belt Conference released the standings for the 2010-11 Commissioner’s Cup following the completion of all the fall championship sports.  The Cougars won the men’s and women’s cross country championships and finished in a tie for first in women’s soccer, taking titles in all three fall sports the school sponsors.  Clayton State is second just ahead of UNC Pembroke.  Armstrong Atlantic State and Lander are tied for fourth.

Columbus State has a rating of .983 as they tied for the women’s soccer regular-season championship with Armstrong Atlantic State.  It is the sixth straight year they have captured at least a tie of the regular season title.  The team went on to win the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship for the fourth time in five years and finished the season 19-2-1.  The CSU women’s cross country team won their sixth straight title while the men took their fifth consecutive crown.  Brittney Skiles and Meshack Koyiaki both set course records on their way to winning the Individual Championship.

Clayton State finished third in the men’s cross country championship and fourth in the women’s while their men’s soccer team was a PBC co-Champion along with Lander.  UNC Pembroke did not claim a conference title in the fall, but both of their cross country teams finished in the top three while their women’s soccer team was also third.  Armstrong Atlantic State was the women’s soccer co-Champion along with CSU while their volleyball team also finished third.  Lander was the men’s soccer PBC co-Champion with Clayton State.

Georgia College, the two-time defending Commissioner’s Cup winner, sits in sixth place following the fall championship season.  GC finished in the top half of the standings in men’s and women’s cross country and women’s soccer.

The PBC Commissioner’s Cup is an all-sports award and will be presented following the academic year in June of 2011.

Commissioner’s Cup standings are based on a rating that is calculated using final regular-season standings (only cross country and golf use championship results).  Based on the number of schools sponsoring a particular sport, teams are given points based on their finish which is then calculated against the total number of points the school had available given the sports it sponsors.  The formula allows for a balanced rating that does not punish schools who may not offer every PBC championship sport.
