Wingate's Kurie Washington earns SAC Player of the Week honors

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University junior guard/forward Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. This is the first time this year and fifth time in her career she has been named the league’s Player of the Week.

Washington tallied 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the Bulldogs defeated Belmont Abbey College 79-61 Saturday in Cuddy Arena. Washington filled out her statistics sheet with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. The two-time All-South Atlantic Conference performer hit five-of-12 field goals and two-of-four from downtown.

In 2010, Washington was named All-SAC for the second year in a row. She also earned a spot on the NCCSIA All-State team. As a sophomore, she was fourth in the SAC and tops on the Bulldog charts with her 18.1 points per game. She was fifth in the league in free throw percentage (80.8 percent) and three-point field goal percentage (38.9 percent). In addition, she was 11th in the SAC in three-point field goals made per game (1.30) and 20th in rebounding (5.1 rebounds per game).

In her 27 games, Washington hit double-figure points 25 times. She netted a career-high 32 points in SAC contest against Mars Hill Feb. 17. The next game, Washington made 10-of-15 field goals en route to a 29-point effort at Newberry Feb. 20. She had 20-plus points nine times. Washington averaged 18.8 points per game in SAC contests, the exact same average from her award-winning freshman campaign.
