TAMPA, Fla. - For just the fourth time in its 48 years of existence, The University of Tampa men's basketball team improved to 10-0 with an 88-69 victory over Tennessee Temple University (3-10) on Sunday night at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.
The Crusaders hung with the Spartans for the majority of the first half before UT went on a 10-0 run to grab a 39-23 advantage with 4:02 to play in the first half. Tampa carried a 46-33 margin to halftime and led by as many as 20 points in the second half.
Three Spartans scored in double figures, led by Anthony Griffis' team-high 20 points. The junior was 8-for-12 from the field and scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half. Rashad Callaway added 17 points while fellow senior Glyn Hunter contributed 15.
Osby Kelly came off the bench to grab a team-leading eight rebounds as Callaway had six assists. Callaway also recorded five steals as UT forced 17 Crusader turnovers. The Spartans also outshot its opponent by a 53.8 to 41.4 percent clip.
The Spartans will take a break before returning to the court on Thursday, Dec. 30 when it hosts Fontbonne University. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Spartan women. UT will offer live stats and a webcast through www.tampaspartans.com.
