RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech placed two players on the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI College Division Volleyball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) that was announced on Thursday.
The two Golden Suns selected were senior middle blocker Sarah Von Lienen (Lakeland, Tenn.) and junior outside hitter Laura Farney (Morton, Ill.). Von Lienen earns second-team honors, while Farney was a third-team honoree.
With their selections, Von Lienen and Farney become the ninth and 10th different Golden Sun volleyball players to be named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and the first since former Golden Suns Kayla Allison was honored in 2008.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school. In addition, all first-team All-District selections now advance on to the Academic All-American ballot.
Tech’s players were two of the four Gulf South Conference players represented on the District VI College Division teams. Joining Von Lienen as a second team selection was Southern Arkansas senior Maggie Glover, while Farney was joined on the third team by Harding senior Emily Tate.
Von Lienen, who has been named to the GSC All-Academic Volleyball Team in 2008 and is a three-time member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll, holds a 3.47 cumulative grade point averaging in art history. On the season, Von Lienen has played in 28 of Tech’s 33 matches and leads the team in kills (364), kills per set (3.71) and blocks (86) and is hitting .345 heading into Thursday’s regular season finale at home against Henderson State. She is currently standing second on the school’s Division II-era block chart with 472 and is fourth on the school’s all-time kill chart with 1,394. In her career, she has played in 131 matches and is a career .318 hitter and has had 68 career double-digit kill matches, which is fifth on the school’s all-time chart. She is a two-time First-Team All-GSC West Division selection, an AVCA Honorable Mention All-South Region honoree in 2008, a two-time Second-Team Daktronics All-South Region selection and was named the GSC West Division Freshman of the Year in 2007.
Farney, who was named the GSC All-Academic Volleyball Team last season and is a two-time member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll, carries a 3.83 cumulative grade point average in Spanish education. On the season, Farney has played in 103 sets and leads the team with 12 double-doubles and is second in kills (320), kills per set (3.11) and digs (312). In addition, she has had 49 blocks, 20 service aces and has recorded double figures in kills in 19 matches. In her career, she has recorded 962 kills and 707 digs in 97 matches.
CoSIDA members in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas were responsible for the voting.
