RMAC Women's Basketball Release #3

Grizzlies will take 3-game winning streak on the road to face #16 Drury (Mo.) in Pueblo Friday

ALAMOSA - Click here to view the third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) women's basketball release of the 2010-11 season. Monday's release features RMAC/Baden Players of the Week, conference standings, upcoming games and recent results, news and notes from around the league, and a look at national polls.

The Grizzlies played in front of a home crowd for the first time this season as both the men's and women's teams played host to the 2010 edition of the Adams State Bankers Classic at Plachy Hall on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20.

Led by all-tournament performers Briana Benjamin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Vera Jo Bustos (Las Vegas, N.M.), the Grizzlies won both of their weekend contests handily, making it three straight wins for ASC, now 3-1 on the young season.

Adams State opened their tournament against Northern New Mexico on Friday, thrashing the Eagles 82-47. No ASC starter played more than 19 minutes in the blowout, and Benjamin came off the bench to lead the Grizzlies with a career-best 17 points and dished out six assist as well. Senior Crystal Loch (Alamosa, Colo.) also scored double-digits for the Grizzlies, scoring 13 of team's 47 bench points.

The Grizzlies shot 58.3 percent (35-60) against the Eagles, tying the fourth best single-game field goal percentage in available team history.

On Saturday the Bustos-led Grizzlies got off to an even hotter start, hitting 12 first half 3-pointers and took a 58-27 lead into the break. Bustos, who finished the game with a tournament-high 24 points, scored 22 in the opening 20 minutes thanks in part to draining six shots from beyond the arc. For her performance Bustos was awarded tournament MVP honors for the second straight year.

Adams State's 15 3-pointers tied the available single-game record, as did their 30 assists, and the Grizzlies hit 33-of-61 (54.1 percent) from the field in the game while holding Cameron (Okla.) University to just 35.8 percent (19-53) shooting.

The two victories improved the Grizzlies women's team's record to 4-2 all-time in the tournament's three-year history, and gives ASC four straight wins at its home tournament.

Next up for the Grizzlies is more tournament action, as they'll head to Pueblo, Colo. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27 for the Colorado State-Pueblo Chuck Stephens Classic. There, Adams State will face a tough test on Friday against 16th-ranked Drury (Mo.) University, and then face the University of Dubuque (Iowa) on Saturday.

Both games will begin at 5 p.m., and Grizzly fans unable to make the trip to Pueblo for the holiday weekend can catch all the action via live broadcast straight from the mouth of Bryant Johnson, the "Voice of the Grizzlies," on KSPK radio on www.kspk.com.
