CHADRON – For the second night in a row, the Chadron State men’s basketball team shrugged off a slow start but the Eagles accelerated to the finish once again en route to their 84-63 victory over Western State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Both Kevin McClelland and Ron Hudson had career scoring nights for Chadron State, now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC. McClelland, a junior from Long Beach, Calif., scored a game-high 22 points, while Hudson, a redshirt freshman from Detroit, chipped in 20 points and six rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.

Western State (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) owned a slim lead through much of the first half, but Chadron State took it for keeps when McClelland nailed a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 32-29 advantage with 22 seconds to play.

The Mountaineers wouldn’t get closer the remainder of the game and the Eagles scored 52 second-half points to push their lead to as many as 22 to cruise to the win.

For the game, Chadron State hit 47.8 percent of their shots (32 for 67) and committed just nine turnovers. Western State shot 39 percent (25 for 64) and committed 13 turnovers.

While McClelland and Hudson were the only Eagles in double figures, Chadron State had several contributors and the Eagles’ bench outscored Western State, 40-15. Trey Mosby scored eight points and dished out six assists and Jan Burris grabbed 10 rebounds and finished with four points and two steals.

Also for CSC, Moala Tautuaa and Sammy Hines each had six points and Ray Mitchell added seven.

Martin Graham led Western State with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Eagles will host South Dakota School of Mines in a non-conference game Tuesday evening. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
