COLUMBUS – The Columbus State men’s basketball team used a 20-2 run midway through the first half to seize control of the contest as they went on to defeat Carver Bible 84-62 Monday night. CSU improves to 1-1 on the year with the home opening win while CB drops to 0-8 on the year.
After the teams traded baskets through the early portion of the game, Carver Bible’s Marcus Fulk hit a three-pointer with 10:09 remaining in the first half to give the visitors an 18-15 lead. The Cougars would then go on their impressive run that was started by Jarmarquis Steverson hitting a pair of free throws. Five other CSU players would score during the run including six straight points by Steve Peterson. The junior scored 10 of the 20 points during the run, capped off by a layup with 2:03 remaining. Columbus State would go into the half with a 40-28 lead.
Carver Bible missed its first two shots of the second half, but hit its next three shots cutting the deficit in half to six points with 17:24 remaining in the game. Columbus State quickly responded with a 7-0 run in the next minute and twenty-four seconds extending its lead to 13. The two sides would trade baskets before CSU would go on another run, this time an 13-2 run to secure the contest. The run was highlighted by a massive Paul Darkwa block that led to an Andrew Houts trey. Houts also capped off the spurt with his third trifecta of the game with 8:52 to go. It gave the Cougars a 66-44 lead over Carver Bible, the largest lead in the contest. The lead would never dip below 16 points for CSU as they won their home opener for the third straight season.
Peterson led the offensive attack that saw four guys score in double-figures, scoring a game-high 20 points. He recorded his first double-double of the season pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. Houts chipped in with 13 points and Steverson and Jonathan Murphy each had 12 points apiece. Steverson also had a game-high seven assists and Darius Mcknight recorded four blocks on the night. As a team, CSU shot 50% (33-of-66) from the floor and hit eight three-pointers. They held a slight 43-39 rebounding edge over the visitors and caused 22 turnovers.
Nicholas Hood led Carver Bible with 11 points and narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine boards. Sean Stringfellow and Marcus Fulks both had 10 points while Fulks grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. CB shot 39% (25-of-64) from the field and hit just five buckets from downtown.
Columbus State has another week off before it returns to the hardwood when it hosts West Florida on Monday, November 29. It will be part of a basketball double-header as the Lady Cougars will take on Shorter starting at 5:00 p.m. The men are set to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center.
