Lightning Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road in First Ever Game Versus Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Redshirt junior guard Jacinda Jones poured in 21 points and sophomore forward Devonne Richardson pitched in a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds), but the Goldey-Beacom College women’s basketball team could not overcome 32.5-percent shooting from the field and fell at Kutztown, 82-69.

The Lightning (0-3) held a 46-42 rebounding advantage, turned the ball over less (14-19) and showed improvement at the free-throw line (made 75-percent as a team); however, they shot just 26-for-80 from the field while Kutztown shot 48-percent for the night and benefited from 23-of-27 shooting (85-percent) from the line.

Head coach Jen Carleton’s squad, which has played a very challenging non-conference schedule to this point, is now 0-3 to start the season for the second straight year. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference improved to 2-1 on the season with all three games coming against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponents.

The 82 points surrendered tonight was the most points allowed by the Lightning since Dec. 20, 2008 when GBC gave up 91 points in a loss to West Chester. The 13-point differential in the final score was the largest margin of defeat for the Lightning this year as they had previously lost each of their other two games by three.

Jones, who shot 8-of-19 from the field but struggled from long distance (1-of-10), surpassed Natasha Scott (’08) for No. 5 on the school’s all-time scoring list as she now has 834 points for her career. She also grabbed six rebounds, and recorded three steals, a block and two assists.

Richardson, who came into the game ranked second in the CACC in rebounding average at 12.5 per-night, was again terrific on the boards, particularly on the offensive glass as she collected six offensive rebounds. She also handed out a team-high five assists and had a game-high five steals.

Senior guard Janae Weldon, who came averaging 11.5 points per-game, had a relatively quiet night with eight points on 2-for-7 shooting from behind the arc and 2-for-2 at the line. With those eight points, she has now gone over 900 points for her career at GBC.

The Lightning managed to hold Kutztown’s star senior forward Melissa McQuade six points below her average tonight, but McQuade (nine points, 11 rebounds) found other ways to impact the game as she dished out a game-high six assists, blocked two shots and grabbed one steal.

The Golden Bears meanwhile got career-highs from sophomore guard Ashley Wood and sophomore forward Steph Zewe. Wood shot 8-for-13 from the field (4-for-5 from three-point distance) and made all four of her free-throws en-route to a 24-point night while Zewe shot 7-for-10 from the field and made 6-of-7 foul shots to score 20.

Zewe scored the first five Kutztown points as the Golden-Bears opened on a 5-1 run in the first minute-and-a-half of play.   The Lightning countered with a 10-3 run, highlighted by back-to-back three-point field goals by sophomore forward Akilah Sewell (eight points, four rebounds) and Weldon, and they took an 11-8 lead a little over four minutes in.

After McQuade tied the game with a three, the Golden Bears would never trail again. Kutztown went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-11 lead and never looked back.

A lay-up by Jones near the 10-minute mark cut the Kutztown lead to two, but that would be the closest GBC would get the rest of the night. The Golden Bears led by as much as 10 in the first stanza but a three-pointer with six seconds left in the half brought the lead down to seven as the two teams went into the break.

Kutztown scored the first four points of the second half to go up 11 and although GBC closed within four on three different occasions, the Lightning could never work their way all the way back. The Golden Bears ended the game on a 12-5 run and won with their largest lead of the game, 13.
