Lory Shaw scores nine off the bench
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) made 4-of-5 3-pointers to score 12 points as the Lewis women’s basketball team dropped their final exhibition contest of the year 74-54 at Western Michigan on Monday evening.
A pair of 3-pointers by Monaco opened up the scoring for Lewis. Lewis took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) at 10:11. The basket gave the Flyers a 17-16 advantage. The teams exchanged leads for the rest of the half before Western Michigan scored the final five points of the half to lead 34-29 at the break.
Western Michigan started the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 43-29 lead. Monaco and senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to get Lewis back in it, however Western Michigan controlled the game the rest of the way.
Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) recorded eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) totaled nine points off the bench while adding six rebounds and an assist.
Western Michigan shot 50.0 percent from the field while Lewis shot just 33.3 percent.
“When the ball isn’t going in the basket sometimes you start taking shots you shouldn’t and that’s not what we’re looking for,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “However I think our energy and our defense especially in the half court was better tonight than against Valpo.”
Lewis opens the regular season on Friday at Saginaw Valley State.
