CSM lands 18 players on All-RMAC teams, Stitt named Coach of the Year;

Garcia, Schiechl garner RMAC Offensive, Defensive Player of the Year honors


GOLDEN, Colo.– A grand total of 18 players from the Colorado School of Mines football team have earned All-RMAC honors for the 2010 season, as announced today by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Clay Garcia has been selected as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Marc Schiechl has been named RMAC Defensive Player of the Year.  Garcia and Schiechl were both First Team All-RMAC selections, and Schiechl was the lone unanimous choice on defense.  Bob Stitt was named RMAC Football Coach of the Year, as well.

Also earning First Team All-RMAC honors for the Orediggers were Cody Renken (as a wide receiver), Blaine Sumner, Robbin Vinnola and Evan Woody.  Taylor Accardi, Kaleb Anderson, Jerrod Doucet, Kyle Goracke, Alex Vigil and Renken (as a kick returner) were Second Team All-RMAC selections while Nate Behrends, Kevin Gallas, Tom Kastens, Paul McVay, Dan Palmer, Josh Ruff and Ryan Wood garnered Third Team All-RMAC recognition.

Garcia, a 6’0”, 200-lb. junior quarterback from Alamosa, Colo. (Alamosa High School), was a four-time RMAC / Rawlings Offensive Player of the Week selection this year.  Garcia (318-of-512 passing; 62.11%), who is one of 24 candidates for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy (NCAA Division II Football Player of the Year), leads the nation in touchdown passes (tied – 38).  A Boettcher Scholar since his arrival at CSM in the fall of 2007, Garcia is also ranked first in the RMAC and sixth in the nation in passing yards (3,813), as well as first in the RMAC and eighth in the nation in total offense (351.55 ypg).  Garcia, who leads the RMAC in passing efficiency (144.86), is now just one touchdown pass away from tying the CSM single-season program record.  Earlier this fall, Garcia earned First Team Academic All-RMAC (unanimous) and RMAC Football Academic Player of the Year accolades.

A 6’3”, 260-lb. senior defensive lineman from Lakewood, Colo. (Bear Creek High School), Schiechl became the all-time NCAA Division II career leader in sacks this season (now has 44.5).  Schiechl leads the RMAC in sacks (10.5) and tackles for a loss (17.0) and is currently second on the team in total tackles (61).  Schiechl, who has been nominated for the Gene Upshaw Award (top lineman in NCAA Division II football), leads the RMAC and is ranked fifth in the nation (tied) in forced fumbles with five.

Renken, a 5’8”, 160-lb. sophomore wide receiver / kick returner / punt returner from Smithson Valley, Texas (Smithson Valley High School), leads the Orediggers in receptions (86), receiving yards (970) and touchdown receptions (nine).  Renken leads the RMAC in kickoff returns (26.4 avg.) and is ranked second in the conference in both all-purpose yardage (160.0 ypg) and receptions per game (7.8).  Renken is also ranked fourth in the conference in receiving yards per game (88.2) and seventh in punt returns (8.8 avg.).

A 6’2”, 330-lb. senior defensive lineman from Conifer, Colo. (Conifer High School), Sumner has 30 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and a team-most three blocked kicks.  Sumner has four rushing touchdowns as a short-yardage running back, as well.

Vinnola, a 6’4”, 230-lb. senior tight end from Arvada, Colo. (Arvada West H.S.), is second on the team in receptions (70) and receiving touchdowns (tied – eight).  Vinnola (10.8 yards per catch), who has 756 yards receiving, is ranked fourth in the RMAC in receptions per game (6.3) and sixth in receiving yards per game (67.5).

A 6’4”, 285-lb. senior offensive lineman from Austin, Texas (McCallum High School), Woody plays left tackle on the offensive line that has led CSM to the top of the RMAC statistical charts in scoring offense (38.6 ppg), total offense (459.4 ypg) and passing offense (360.6 ypg).

Accardi, a 6’2”, 200-lb. sophomore punter from Littleton, Colo. (Dakota Ridge High School), leads the nation in gross punting average (45.58) on 50 punts so far this season.  Accardi, who has 16 punts of 50-or-more yards, has pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line on 12 occasions and has induced seven fair catches.

A 6’3”, 270-lb. senior defensive lineman from Littleton, Colo. (Bear Creek High School), Anderson is ranked second in the RMAC in both tackles for a loss (tied – 14.5) and forced fumbles (four), as well as third on the team in total tackles (59).  Anderson is ranked 13th in the RMAC in sacks (tied – 3.5).

Doucet, a 6’1”, 184-lb. sophomore wide receiver from Baytown, Texas (Ross S. Sterling High School), is second on the team in receiving touchdowns (tied – eight) and receiving yards (907).  Doucet is ranked second in the conference in receiving yards per game (102.2), third in receptions per game (7.8), seventh in all-purpose yardage (124.2 ypg) and eighth in scoring (tied – 6.0 ppg).

Goracke, a 6’3”, 200-lb. senior defensive back from Tecumseh, Neb. (Tecumseh Public High School), is third in the RMAC in interceptions (tied – three) and fourth on the team in total tackles (56).

A 6’2”, 220-lb. junior linebacker from Arvada, Colo. (Faith Christian High School), Vigil leads the RMAC and is ranked fifth in the nation (tied) in fumble recoveries.  Vigil, who has 55 total tackles, seven tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles, is ranked 20th in the RMAC in tackles per game (6.1).

A 6’7”, 305-lb. sophomore offensive lineman from Parker, Colo. (Ponderosa High School), Behrends plays right tackle on the offensive line that has led CSM to the top of the RMAC statistical charts in scoring offense (38.6 ppg), total offense (459.4 ypg) and passing offense (360.6 ypg).

Gallas, a 5’11”, 190-lb. senior defensive back from Gilbert, Ariz. (Mesquite High School), has broken up three passes while recording 33 total tackles (25 solo stops).

A 6’5”, 247-lb. senior tight end / wide receiver from Golden, Colo. (D’Evelyn High School), Kastens has 39 receptions for 670 yards and a team-second-most (tied) eight touchdown catches.  Kastens, who leads Mines with 17.2 yards per reception, is ranked seventh in the RMAC in receiving yards per game (67.0).

McVay, a 6’3”, 170-lb. freshman kicker from College Station, Texas (A&M Consolidated High School), was named RMAC / Rawlings Special Teams Player of the Year earlier this week.  McVay is ranked third in the RMAC in field goals made (11) and 10th in scoring (5.5 ppg).

A 6’2”, 230-lb. sophomore running back from Greeley, Colo. (University High School), Palmer has 151 carries for 672 yards (4.5 avg.) and 11 touchdowns.  Palmer, who has three games with 100-or-more yards on the ground, also had 30 receptions (10.0 avg.) and three touchdown catches.  Palmer is ranked fifth in the RMAC in scoring (7.6 ppg) and eighth in rushing yards per game (61.1).

Ruff, a 6’0”, 225-lb. junior linebacker from Castle Rock, Colo. (Douglas County High School), leads CSM in solo (34), assisted (42) and total tackles (76).  The owner of seven tackles for a loss, Ruff is ranked second in the RMAC in fumble recoveries (tied – three) and 14th in tackles per game (6.9).

A 6’0”, 195-lb. redshirt freshman defensive back from San Antonio, Texas (Smithson Valley High School), Wood leads the RMAC and is ranked sixth in the nation (tied) with six interceptions.  Wood, who has 48 total tackles (32 solo), is also tied for second in the RMAC in fumble recoveries (three).

Mines has qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II football championships.  CSM has earned the #6 seed in Super Regional Three.  #6 seed Mines (9-2 overall) will play at #3 seed Grand Valley State University (10-1 overall) on Saturday, November 20th, at 11:00 a.m. MT (1:00 p.m. ET - local time in Allendale, Mich.) at Lubbers Stadium in the first round.  CSM is currently ranked #16 in the AFCA Top 25 Poll, while the Lakers are ranked #6.
