UMass Lowell Softball Went Door-to-Door on Halloween in Second Annual Trick-or-Treat for Charity Initiative
For the second straight year, the UMass Lowell softball team went trick-or-treating in the Greater Lowell community to collect non-perishable food items to donate to those less fortunate and also collected candy to send overseas to U.S. Troops abroad. The squad visited the Merrimack Valley Food Bank earlier this week and was able to make the sizeable donation of 578 pounds.
The food bank considers the value of this donation to be in excess of $975.
“Without the support of people like [the UMass Lowell softball team], we would not be able to accomplish our mission to provide adequate nutrition and freedom from hunger for those less fortunate,” said Amy Pessia, Executive Director at the MVFB.
The initiative, which Head Coach Sean Cotter jumpstarted over a decade ago when he was coaching at Plattsburgh State has the potential to grow in the future, as Cotter hopes to increase the breadth in the years to come.
Beginning in 2001, Cotter led the Plattsburgh softball squad to collect over 20,000 canned goods for local food pantries and Cotter believes his current squad is well on its way to carry on the tradition here in Lowell.
