Brevard, N.C. - Kelvin Jeter broke the 1,000 yard rushing mark in the season and Trey Jenkins finished with a career high 17 tackles on the afternoon, but the Newberry offense got the job done both on the ground and in the air in defeating the Tornados at Asheville High School, 31-3.
Jeter led Brevard (3-7, 0-6 SAC) with 90 yards rushing on 18 carries, breaking the 1,000 yard rushing mark midway through the second quarter to become the first BC running back to eclipse the 1,000 yard rushing mark in a season in modern program history. Neville Bryce had 44 yards on eight carries and Thadus Benton III picked up 32 on six carries as the Tornados racked up 194 rushing yards in the contest.
Michael Crumbaker was one of 10 when dropping back in the game, for 18 yards, hooking up with Eric Watts for a first down in the fourth quarter.
Trey Jenkins finished led the defense with 17 tackles, with his performance placing him third all-time in the BC single season rankings for tackles in a game, while Prince Simunyu finished up the game with nine. Salonik Amos added eight tackles and a tackle for loss from his position at corner back, while Christian Lumbu recovered a fumble.
Lyndon Ingram led the Wolves (4-5, 3-3 SAC) rushing attack on the afternoon, carrying the ball 24 times for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Parker Hite toted the ball eight times for 73 yards. Alkeem Sherman contributed 42 yards on four carries and added a score as the Wolves racked up 296 yards on the ground in the game.
Hite and Taniel Massey went a combined 15 of 23 from the quarterback position for Newberry, combining for 133 yards, while Hite threw two touchdown passes. David Pressley led the receiving corps with seven catches for 43 yards and a score, while Treginald Wilson added an eight yard scoring catch.
Harry Cabaniss, starting for the injured Ron Parker, led the Wolves defense with nine tackles, including two for a loss from his position at safety, while Josh Williams contributed six in the game. James Bostick finished up the game with an interception to go with five tackles and Apollo Stretch and Derrell Kinard added sacks on the afternoon for Newberry.
Newberry won the toss and elected to receive to start the game, and Kamaal McIlwain returned Justin Powell’s opening kickoff to the Newberry 46 yard line, setting up excellent field position for the Wolves on their opening drive. The Wolves moved the ball down to the Brevard 23 yard line, before the BC defense forced a fourth down as Jenkins stopped Pressley short of the line on third-and-nine. Britt Blackmon’s 40 yard field goal sailed through the uprights to give the Wolves the first lead of the ball game, 3-0, with 10:57 to play in the first quarter.
Jeter took over the Tornados opening possession as the freshman slot back carried the ball five times for 46 yards, including back-to-back gains of 16 and 22 yards to advance the ball from the BC 27 yard line, down to the Newberry eight. Facing a fourth-and-seven at the Wolves eight yard line, Chase Henry lined up for the 25 yard field goal, but his attempt was blocked by Kelton Hall and the Wolves recovered in the end zone for the touchback, ending the BC scoring opportunity.
Following a Newberry three-and-out, the Tornados again drove down the field as Jeter found daylight to move the ball 31 yards on four carries, advancing the ball to the Newberry 14 yard line at the start of the second quarter. Crumbaker’s pass intended for Derek Church was incomplete to stall the drive, but Henry’s field goal attempt from 31 yards out was good, tying the game up at 3 with 14:49 to play in the half.
After the teams traved punts, the Wolves took over on their 44 yard line as Hite entered the game as the Newberry signal caller. The redshirt freshman moved the team down the field as the Wolves featured a balanced attack on the drive, before completing a short pass to Wilson, who took it eight yards in for the score to put the Wolves up 10-3 with 6:21 left in the half.
The Wolves also moved the ball down the field on their next possession, moving the ball from their own 19 yard line to the Brevard 20 before a substitution infraction stalled the Newberry drive. Blackmon’s 42 yard field goal was blocked by Rashad Dirton to end the final scoring chance of the half as the teams went into the locker rooms with the Tornados down, 10-3.
Brevard opened up with possession in the second half, but facing a third and long, Crumbaker’s pass was intercepted at the Newberry 32 yard line by James Bostick to end the drive.
Newberry capitalized on the turnover, moving down the field on eight plays in 3:43, with Ingram capping off the drive with an eight yard plunge into the end zone, giving the Wolves a 17-3 lead.
The Wolves would add another touchdown in the third quarter on their next possession as Pressley caught a three-yard touchdown from Hite, while Sherman put the game away with 3:50 left in the fourth quarter, scoring on a run from 16 yards out as the Tornados concluded their final home game of the season, falling to Newberry, 31-3.
Brevard finishes up the 2010 regular season on the road next week, heading to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on SAC rival Mars Hill College. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Lions in Meares Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.
