Dionte Grey leads Tusculum with 14 points
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- East Tennessee State shot 59.3 percent from the field and defeated Tusculum College 78-41 in a men's basketball exhibition game Monday night at the MSHA Athletic Center.
Isiah Brown finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots in 24 minutes for the Bucs, the two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions. ETSU connected on 32-of-54 shots in the game, hitting 57.7 percent (15-for-26) in the first half and 60.7 percent (17-for-28) in the second half.
Dionte Grey led the Pioneers with 14 points, but the Buc defense held Tusculum to 29.3 percent shooting (12-for-41) in the contest while forcing 22 turnovers.
Justin Tubbs (15 points) and Micah Williams (10 points) also reached double figures for ETSU, which trailed 7-2 after four minutes but went on a 15-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 17-7 lead.
ETSU led 36-21 at halftime as Brown led all players with 12 points and eight rebounds. JD Miller paced Tusculum with seven points and five rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench in the opening half.
Leading 40-23 with 17:16 to go, the Bucs went on a 20-4 run over a three-minute span to go on top 60-27 with 14:02 left. ETSU went 7-for-7 from the field during the spurt, including a pair of three-pointers by Tubbs and one from Williams.
Overall, ETSU went 7-for-17 from three-point range while Tusculum connected on 2-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc. The Pioneers finished 15-for-26 at the free-throw line, and the Bucs cashed in on 7-of-10 attempts.
Miller finished with nine points and five rebounds off the Pioneers bench, while starting center Tommy Klempin tallied seven points and six boards in 20 minutes of action.
Tusculum will tip off its regular season on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Clayton State in Pioneer Arena as part of the SAC/Peach Belt Classic. Augusta State will square off with Anderson in the opening game of the classic at 5 p.m.
