Jaguar senior All-American one shot off the pace
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Third-ranked Augusta State struggled to a 38-over 385 Monday in the first round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif.
ASU senior Henrik Norlander fired a 3-under 68 and is in second place, just one shot back of UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay. Stanford’s David Chung (69) and Sihwan Kim (71) are third and fourth, while six players are tied for fifth at 1-over 72.
The Jaguars are in 12th place in the 12-team field. Mitch Krywulycz is tied for 52nd after a 78 while Carter Newman and Taylor Floyd are 59th following a pair of 79’s. Patrick Reed and Olle Bengtsson are 70th after posting respective 10-over 81’s.
Tourney host UCLA combined for a 367 (+12), good for a one-stroke lead over Stanford. Washington is third, three shots back while Northwestern is fourth and Oregon is fifth, 10 shots in front of the Jags.
The three-day, 54-hole event, renamed in 2009 to honor UCLA supporter and Bay-area philanthropist Jack Gifford, features a five-out-of-six scores format. The venue is the par-72, 7,169-yard CordeValle Country Club ( HYPERLINK "http://www.cordevalle.com" www.cordevalle.com), which recently hosted the PGA Tour’s Frys.com Open won by Rocco Mediate.
