Nebraska-Kearney downs Mines women, 75-67

GOLDEN, Colo. – Nebraska-Kearney held off the Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team for a 75-67 victory in RMAC women’s basketball action on Friday night at Lockridge Arena.

Mines led by six early but a 9-2 run by the Lopers swung the score back in their favor as UNK took its first lead with 12:50 on the clock on a Kelsey Lane basket.

Tied at 16 each, UNK converted on three straight baskets to take a six-point lead and extended it to eight points after a Vanessa Leeper three pointer with 5:59 remaining in the first half.

A 12-4 run by the Orediggers knotted the game at 34 but once again the Lopers withstood Mines’ run scoring five unanswered points in the final 1:08 to take a five-point lead into the break.
          
UNK held an eight-point lead with 9:44 left in the game but Mines chipped away using a 10-3 run to pull within a point after a Courtney Gallo three pointer with 7:07 on the clock.

Once again the Lopers held off CSM with a jumper by Kelsey Lane and back-to-back steals which led to a seven-point Kearney lead with 5:37 remaining in the game.

Mines would pull back within two points but was unable to take the lead down the stretch as the Lopers iced the game with free throws in the final two minutes.
        
Three players finished in double figures for Nebraska-Kearney (4-5, 3-2 RMAC). Leeper finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Lane added 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Megan Becker contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
          
Brecca Gaffney and Kait Soehner combined for 42 of Mines 67 points in the game. Gaffney scored a career-high 28 points (10-of-20 FG, 7-of-8 FT) while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Soehner tied a career-high with 14 points (5-of-8 FG) grabbing three boards and collecting three steals. Gallo added eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals.

The Orediggers (4-5 overall, 0-4 RMAC) will host Chadron State tomorrow night, Saturday, Dec. 18th at Lockridge Arena at 6:00 pm.
