Oakdale, N.Y.- October 29th, marked the 5th anniversary of Dowling Athletics and their continued partnership with the Keep Islip Clean program, an affiliate of Keep American Beautiful. Nearly 300 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators took to the streets of Dowling's surrounding community armed with garbage bags to collect various debris in parks, parking lots, and on the local roadways.
With all Dowling teams participating during the day, each squad was assigned to different areas of the town such as the Oakdale and Great River train stations, Sycamore Avenue, Windsor Place, and many other public places in need of a good cleaning. Along with picking up trash, the Softball and Men's Lacrosse teams each painted over graffiti thanks to the help of the Town of Islip Anti-Graffiti Unit.
Over 100 bags of trash were collected at the end of the day, leaving the streets of Islip cleaner than they were the day before.
“The student-athletes and staff of Dowling Athletics are committed to helping the community whether it be through holding youth clinics throughout the year or picking up trash on the street.” Said Vice President for Athletics Rick Cole, Jr. “By participating in this event each year we aim to make a difference for a community that has been our home for many years.”
Along with the many student-athletes participating Friday morning, on hand was Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Islip Commissioner of Public Works Rich Baker, Islip Council Members Steve Flotteron, Gene Parrington, Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, and numerous officials from Keep Islip Clean.
Keep Islip Clean, founded in 1989, is a non-profit organization that focuses on the beautification of the Islip Township that encompasses the 18 hamlets.
