MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team (2-3) used a dominating first half to down visiting Concordia College-Selma (0-7), 69-35. The game marked the 2010-11 home opener for the Falcons and UM impressed in the first half out-scoring the Lady Hornets 40-15. Junior Davia Harris (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) led the way for the Falcons scoring 14 points while hitting 7-of-8 from the field. Senior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) added 10 points and led the team in rebounding with seven.
Senior Kris Seigenthaler (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) and freshman Alex Strickland (Pinson, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) each scored nine points. Strickland added six boards to finish second on the team. Junior Tiffany McClure (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) led the team with seven assists while chipping in seven points.
The Falcons shot 54.4 percent while holding the Lady Hornets to just 26.8 percent shooting.
UM opened the game with a 12-4 run that lasted just over six minutes and was capped off by a jumper from Harris. UM’s lead remained around the 8-point mark for the next several minutes but with 6:31 to play in the first half and the score 19-11 UM went on a 21-4 run to close out the half up 40-15. The run was sparked by back-to-back baskets from Parrott and then a three-pointer from junior Taylor Welch (Salem, Ill./Salem Community).
The Falcons opened the second half with a 12-0 run to push their lead to 37. A pair of baskets and three free throws from McClure combined with a layup by Harris and a free throw by senior Jessica Collins (Jackson, Miss./Callaway) combined for the 12-point spurt.
The Falcons lead hovered around the 32-point mark the rest of the half as both teams traded baskets the rest of the way. The final score was 69-35 in favor of the Falcons.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to #3 Lander University for their first Peach Belt Conference contest.
