Young, Metcalf spark win over Queens

MARS HILL, N.C. - Brittini Young scored a season-high 27 points and was 15-16 from the free-throw line to lead Mars Hill over Queens, 80-75. The Lions improve to 4-1. The Royals drop to 1-2.

Mars Hill jumped out to an early 7-2 lead off a trey by Young three minutes into the game. The Lions assumed a 10-point advantage, 32-22, off a fastbreak layup by Young with 5:07 left in the first period, but Queens went on a 11-1 run to cut the deficit to 34-33. Jessica Lewis had seven straight points to conclude the spurt for the Royals, but Mars Hill maintained a 39-36 lead at halftime.

The Lions grabbed another double-digit lead with 15:28 left in the game. Young drilled two free throws to make the score 51-40.

Trailing 55-46, Queens went on a 10-0 run in the span of 2:37. A fastbreak layup by Marissa Hudley gave the Royals a one-point advantage with 11:01 left in the game.

The rest of the game was back and forth. A trey from Kristen Metcalf with 6:14 left in the second period gave Mars Hill a 68-65 lead, but the Royals took the upper hand, 69-68 at the 4:37 mark.

On the next possession of the game, Metcalf missed a three from the corner, but Jackie Simon grabbed the offensive rebound and found Metcalf alone in the corner for another trey to give Mars Hill the lead for good.

Metcalf tied a season-high with 14 points. Taylor Deal and Jocelyn Williams added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Lewis tallied a team-high 22 points for Queens. Dyonna Battle poured in 13 points. Hudley finished with 11 points.

Queens was strapped with foul trouble all night. Battle, Melissa Thomas and Shakaria Hamlin each fouled out of the contest.

The Lions were 26-33 from the charity stripe, while the Royals were 10-18.

Mars Hill will host Lenoir-Rhyne on December 4. Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 2 p.m.
