College of Charleston edges Francis Marion in exhibition action

CHARLESTON, SC – Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year Andrew Goudelock scored 16 points to pace five Cougars in double figures as the College of Charleston edged Francis Marion University 86-75, Friday evening (Nov. 5) in men’s basketball exhibition action.

Francis Marion was led by freshman guard Evrik Gary who finished with 16 points and six rebounds.  Senior swingman Dominique Coleman registered 13 points, while junior forward Liki Turner had 12 and senior forward Simel Boyd 10.

The Patriots connected on 13-of-24 three-point attempts, including 7-of-12 in a second half that saw FMU outscore the Cougars 43-41.  Francis Marion also connected on all 10 of its free throw attempts.

Goudelock was joined in the double-digit scoring column by freshman Trent Wiedeman who tallied 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds before the crowd of 2,025 at the Carolina First Arena. Senior Donavan Monroe, sophomore Andrew Lawrence, and sophomore Willis Hall each had 11.

The Cougars, who finished third nationally in three-pointers made in 2009-10, knocked down a trio of three-pointers within the first five minutes of the game including one deep in the right corner by junior Antwaine Wiggins which sparked a 10-2 opening run.

The Cougars led 45-32 at halftime.

Francis Marion will open its regular season at home on Nov. 16 against Allen University.  CofC will officially commence its 2010-11 season against the defending ACC regular-season champion University of Maryland in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer on Nov. 10.

The game pitted a pair of former rivals in the old NAIA District Six of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
