AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of West Florida women’s basketball team fell for the third game in a row, 70-57, to Georgia Southwestern Wednesday night at the Storm Dome. The Argonauts are now 3-3 on the season.
UWF trailed by just two points, 30-28, at the half. But a late 10-0 run by the Hurricanes (4-1) handed UWF their third loss in five days.
Kirstin McIntyre led the Argonaut effort with 14 points off the bench, while Sher’Ryan Scott caught fire in the second half and finished with 12 points. UWF shot 38.5% from the floor and was 0-for-9 from three-point range, marking the second game this season that the Argos have failed to hit a three-pointer.
Five Hurricanes scored in double-figures, led by Jessica Bivins, with 14 points. Terra Branch added 13 points, while Tania Walters had 12 and Kanita Holloway and Cierra Duhart each chipped in ten. GSW shot 48.5% in the game, tops among UWF opponents this season.
The game started in fine fashion for Shannan Bergen’s team, as the Argos jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Desiree Dotey, Scott and Octavia Bearden scored early buckets to put UWF by six with 18:11 left in the first half.
UWF led until the 11:15 mark of the opening period, when Branch hit her second jump shot in a row to put the home side up, 16-15. After a four-minute stretch where both teams went scoreless, West Florida claimed their final lead of the game with 4:34 left, when a pair of Jessica Young free throws made the score 21-20.
But a 10-3 GSW run, capped by a three-ball from Walters, put the Hurricanes up, 30-24, with 2:01 left. Georgia Southwestern carried a two-point lead into the halftime intermission.
A basket by Krissy Diggs on UWF’s first possession of the 2nd half tied the game at 30-30, but Branch scored an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Hurricanes up for good just seconds later. GSW pushed the lead to 48-39 on a freebie by Shakira White at the 11:31 mark.
McIntyre capped a 6-0 UWF run to bring the Argos to within three, 48-45, with 9:51 left. But Georgia Southwestern responded with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. Branch and Duhart each scored four points during the spurt, while UWF turned the ball over on three straight possessions.
The Argos would never come closer than nine points down in the final 6:30 of the game.
Young finished with 12 rebounds to pace the Argos, while Jade Howard dished out eight assists with just two turnovers. Howard now has 15 assists in her last two games.
Duhart was a force on the interior for the Hurricanes, making several key defensive plays during GSW’s second half surge. In addition to her ten points, Duhart finished with nine rebounds and six blocked shots.
West Florida will try to snap their slide when they play host the 2010 Highpointe Hotel Corporation Classic this weekend. The Argonauts will face Eckerd College on Friday night, with first tip scheduled for 7 pm.
