UAA spikers top WOU, await postseason fate

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 13) – Jackie Matthisen and Marie Borowikow tallied 10 kills apiece and Matthisen added 18 digs Saturday to lift the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-27, 25-14, 25-21, 25-14 home victory over Western Oregon and a probable spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Seawolves (18-8, 13-5 GNAC), ranked No. 7 in the West Region, also secured third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the win, finishing one match ahead of tonight’s opponent from Monmouth, Ore.

The Wolves (14-9, 12-6) got 12 kills and seven digs from Danielle Reese but were unable to capitalize on their first-set victory.

“I think we got better at finding some creases to hit into and our hitters were able to see around the block a little better after that first set,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “At times we’re a great volleyball team but we just haven’t been consistent. The tools are there, and we just have to be able to take advantage of it. We had some good passing tonight and did just that.”

UAA was able capitalize on a balanced offensive attack once again, getting at least seven kills from six different players to out-hit WOU .248 to .076. Freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton had nine kills and eight total blocks – including two solos – and junior outside hitter McKenzie Moss broke out of her recent slump with eight kills on .389 hitting, 18 digs and two aces.

Senior Cortney Lundberg, playing her final home match, had seven kills without an error and added four block assists, while junior right-side hitter Lee Golden ripped seven kills as well.

Lundberg finished with a match-best .467 attack percentage and Borowikow committed just one attack error to hit .421.

Setters Siobhan Johansen and Adriana Aukusitino lifted 23 assists apiece for UAA,  which will wait to find out its postseason fate Sunday. The announcement will be made at approximately 6 p.m. AST at NCAAsports.com.

Should the Seawolves receive a bid, it will be their second year in a row making the tournament and the fourth time in school history.
