Coscia and Hadder named to All-Conference Teams, Eddy earns Rookie Team honors
LOWELL, MA (Nov. 8, 2010) –On the eve of the 2010 Northeast-10 Volleyball Tournament, three River Hawks were honored by the conference office. Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) was named to the All-Conference First Team, Jillian Hadder (Yucaipa, Calif.) earned Second Team honors and Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) was selected to the Rookie Team.
Coscia received First Team honors for the second consecutive season after recording team-highs with 359 kills and 89 blocks. A five-time NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll selection, Coscia ranks first the conference in points (4.49), fourth in kills (3.59), fourth in blocks (0.89) and fifth in hitting percentage (.301).
“At the beginning of the season, Sarah really had some terrific numbers,” said head coach Karen McNulty. “Her points—from blocks, kills and aces—rank her 11th in the country. She’s dominant in the front row and we think she’s a First Team player.”
For her career as a River Hawk, Coscia has tallied 1,310 kills, 307 digs and 306 blocks—ranking as the program’s active kills leader. The dual threat has totaled over 300 kills and 75 blocks in each of the last three seasons.
Hadder’s spot on the Second Team marks her third career All-Conference selection. The powerful outside-hitter was tabbed for the Second Team in 2007 and Third Team in 2008. Hadder has scored 246 kills, second only to Coscia, while digging 182 balls.
“We’re very happy about Hadder’s selection to the Second Team,” McNulty said. “If you look at her numbers at the end of the season, they’re pretty good. This will be her third year as an All-Conference member and it really speaks to the career she has had at UMass Lowell.”
The ultimate teammate, Hadder has recorded 1,244 kills and 1,030 digs over the past four seasons. She is the first member of the 1,000-1,000 club since Julie Handy (2002-05).
Eddy’s appointment to the Rookie Team came after a standout freshman season at libero. The converted high school setter made an immediate impact on the River Hawks’ roster, digging a career-high 32 balls in her collegiate debut. Eddy ranks ninth in the NE-10 in digs per set with 4.15 and has recorded double-digit digs in 21 of 26 matches.
“I think, without question, Carolyn is one of the best freshmen in the conference and her selection is indicative of that,” McNulty said of Eddy. “There are a lot of great players on the All-Conference Teams and we’re just glad her accomplishments we’re recognized.”
The announcement marked the most members of UMass Lowell selected to All-Conference teams since 2005 when Handy, Katie Harrington (2002-05) and Caitlin Harte (2003-06) were each honored.
The trio will join the rest of the River Hawks as they head to Pace University tomorrow evening for a clash with the Setters in the opening round of the conference tournament at 7 p.m.
