Columbus State Women’s Basketball Runs Past Valdosta State 58-41

COLUMBUS – The Columbus State women’s basketball team defeated Valdosta State 58-41 Tuesday night in front of the home crowd in the Lumpkin Center.  CSU improves to 2-0 on the year while the Lady Blazers even their mark at 2-2.

The game started with a jumper in the post by Dominique Gilbert and a three-pointer by Tandria Milton.  After a Valdosta State field goal, CSU scored the next two buckets racing out to a 9-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes of play.  From that point on, the teams would trade baskets throughout the majority of the first half.  The Lady Cougars would hit a dry spell to end the first half scoring only seven points in the final 10 minutes of play, but stout defense allowed them to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Blazers scored the first basketball of second half cutting the margin to 24-23, the smallest deficit they would face the rest of the way.  CSU went on a 12-2 in the next 7:49 of action at that point extending the lead to 36-25.  Four different Lady Cougars scored during the run with Lauren Matheny and Carrie Washington putting up four points each. Nakita Holt made a layup with 3:44 remaining extending the lead to 15 points.  VSU tried to amount a comeback scoring the next two baskets, but CSU scored the final six points on the game.

Gilbert led the offensive attack for Columbus State scoring 14 points while Matheney, Marah Wright and Marina DeFoor each chipped in with eight points.  Gilbert and Asha Alexander grabbed a game-high five rounds.  CSU shot 44.2% from the floor and hit several key free throws down the stretch to ice the game.  The defense was tremendous holding the visitors to just 28.3% from the field and 2-of-19 (10.5%) from three-point range.

Brittany Ferguson led Valdosta with 13 points and recorded a team-high seven boards.  Amanda Haven and Shakeda Richie added seven points each.

The Lady Cougars return to the court on Saturday, November 27 when it travels to Fort Valley State.  Columbus State dropped the contest last season to FVS 66-56.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
