Celosmanovic garners trio of All-CCAA awards

Junior forward named conference Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Year

WALNUT CREEK  With Ferid Celosmanovic and Chris Akwaja combining for 21 goals on the season, it¹s small wonder the Chico State men¹s soccer team captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division crown and is competing for not only a conference championship but a spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament. The two junior forwards were recognized this week for their stellar play in 2010 by being named to the All-CCAA Men¹s Soccer First Team, with Celosmanovic also picking up the conference¹s Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Year awards. Two other Wildcats, midfielders Tyson Crim and Zach Bradford, received all-conference honorable mentions.

Celosmanovic, a transfer from West Valley Community College, provided over a third of Chico State¹s total offense in 2010, scoring 12 goals (tied for first in the CCAA) in his first season as a Wildcat to earn all-conference honors. Akwaja, an All-CCAA honorable mention a year ago, had an even better season in 2010, netting a career-high nine goals and doling out two assists for the 13-5 ¹Cats.

Crim, a sophomore forward, led Chico State with six assists on the year while contributing a pair of goals. Bradford, a senior midfielder, wrapped up his Wildcat career finishing second on the team with four assists.

The Wildcats, the No. 2 seed in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament, face fourth-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in first round action Friday afteroon at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus. The Wildcats-Toros winner will take on the winner of Friday¹s other first round match between Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma Sunday at 11:30 a.m. for the CCAA Championship.

Chico State enters the conference championship tournament No. 2 in the latest West Region rankings. The top four teams in the region following this weekend¹s action will advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The NCAA
selection show announcing all championship tournament teams will air via a live webcast Monday at 4 p.m. at www.NCAA.com.
