Albany State's Stanley Jennings named Harlon Hill Award candidate

An Albany State University football player will compete for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. Junior quarterback Stanley Jennings is one of 24 candidates that was announced by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee. The list of candidates includes six players from each of the four Division II Super Regionals.
      
In his first season as a Golden Ram, Jennings has led the team to an undefeated regular season. An offensive powerhouse and key anchor of the Golden Rams "Gold Rush" offense, Jennings has completed 116 of 206 passes for 2,066 yards and 23 TDs, and is ranked No. 1 in the SIAC and No. 2 in passing efficiency in the nation with an efficiency rate of 170.60. He passed for 284 yards and four touchdowns and led the Golden Rams to 414 total offensive yards against Lane College on Oct. 2. He led the Golden Rams to 435 total offensive yards and his longest pass was 90 yards against Benedict College on Oct. 16. He had 279 passing yards and led the team to 442 yards of total offense against Stillman College on Oct. 30.
      
Jennings also has 136 rushing yards on 89 carries for two touchdowns, an average of 13.6 yards per game. He has 2202 yards of total offense, which makes him No. 1 in the SIAC and No. 52 in the nation in total offense. He has been named the SIAC's Newcomer of the Week four times and Offensive Player of the Week twice. He has been named National Division II Football Player of the Week twice by the Heritage Sports Radio Network.
      
Jennings has helped the Golden Rams to a #1 ranking in the Super Regional Two and #5 ranking in the AFCA Division II national football poll. Under his leadership, Albany State is ranked No. 3 in passing efficiency in Division II football. Albany State is also ranked No. 1 in pass efficiency defense and total defense, and No. 2 in rushing defense and scoring defense in the nation. The Golden Rams are No. 5 in sacks and tackles for loss, and No. 6 in pass defense. Albany State is No. 26 in kickoff returns, No 47 in net punting, No. 50 in scoring offense, No. 53 in rushing offense, No. 58 in passing offense and No. 65 in total offense. Albany State leads the SIAC in passing efficiency, passing efficiency defense, passing offense, total offense, total defense, rushing defense, scoring defense and kickoff returns.
      
In addition to Jennings, other candidates on the Super Regional Two ballot are junior quarterback Bo Cordell of Tusculum College, junior quarterback Cody Haffly of Wingate University. senior quarterback Nick Hardesty of Henderson State University, junior running back Jonas Randolph of Mars Hill College and senior quarterback Deon Williams of the University of West Alabama.
      
A total of 31 candidates for the award were initially nominated by the sports information directors at the 148 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions and reviewed by the Hill Regional Advisory Committees, which trimmed the list of candidates. The 24 initial candidates, which includes 15 quarterbacks, seven running backs, one receiver and one linebacker, will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Nov. 19.
      
The winner of the 2010 award, which is presented by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee, will be announced at the 25th Annual Harlon Hill Trophy Presentation Banquet on Friday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Florence Conference Center. The NCAA II National Championship Game is scheduled for Dec. 18 at Florence’s Braly Municipal Stadium.
      
The Hill Trophy is named for former University of North Alabama player, Harlon Hill, who was a standout with the Lions from 1950-53 before a successful career in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions. The trophy was first presented in 1986.
