Merrimack Falls to Adelphi in Season Finale, 4-2

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team closed out the 2010 season with a 4-2 loss against Adelphi Friday evening at Warrior Field. The Warriors final record stands at 8-11 while the Panthers improved to 12-8 on the year.

April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) put Merrimack up 1-0 20 minutes into the first half. Katie Zubkus (Dover, N.H.) carried the ball down the center of the field and dished it to Daugherty at the top right corner of the arc. Daugherty rifled a shot past the Panthers’ goalkeeper and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Adelphi got the goal back on a tally by Julianne Gerbino just four minutes later. The Panthers seized the lead with under three minutes remaining in the opening period on a score by Natasha Pedzik. Pedzik found the back of the net after a scramble in front of the Merrimack cage.

The visitors netted their third goal of the contest on Gerbino’s second goal of the game and 13th of the season. Jeanette Heimerle slipped the ball past the onrushing goalie to Gerbino who placed it into the open net to give Adelphi a 3-1 lead with less than 15 minutes left in the game.

Heimerle capped off the scoring for the Panthers with a blast from the top of the arc. Heimerle’s goal put the away side up 4-1 with seven minutes left to play.

Merrimack would not be silenced in its final game of the year. After a timeout, the Warriors struck for the second time on the night. Senior Kaitlyne Cullinane potted her first goal of the year, sending in a shot off of a rebound in front of the frame in her last contest with the Blue and Gold.

Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) turned aside five shots for Merrimack and finished the 2010 season with an 8-11 overall record. Lucia Vigliotti started between the posts for Adelphi and made one save. Kristine Puzio came on after halftime and turned aside a pair of shots to earn her second win of the year.

The Panthers held the edge in shots, 15-11, in the match and also in penalty corners, 6-5. Daugherty and Zubkus paced Merrimack with three shots each.
