2010 Mars Hill Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Four former athletes will join elite group

MARS HILL, N.C. - On November 13, the Athletic Department at Mars Hill College will induct four new members into their Hall of Fame. David Cassell, Mickey Hoyle, Stacy Mark and Denise Shelton are the 2010 inductees. The new members will be officially inducted at 6 p.m., in Pittman Dining Hall on the MHC campus in the annual Hall of Fame Banquet following the Lions last home football contest against Brevard. Anyone interested in attending the event can call the Athletic Department Office at (828) 689-1219.

David Cassell was a tight end on the Lions' football team from 1998-2001. He was a second team All-SAC selection in 1998 and was a first team All-SAC pick in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He was the winner of the Jacob's Blocking Trophy in 2001 that distinguishes the best offensive lineman in the league. David was named an American Football Coaches Association All-American in 2001 and started in 42 games and recorded 143 catches for 1,929 yards and 20 touchdowns. He averaged 45.9 yards receiving per game and 13.3 yards per catch.

Mickey Hoyle was a member of the men's basketball team from 1957-59. He was one of Mars Hill's most celebrated athletes from the junior college era. Mickey was a two-time All-Conference selection including being a unanimous choice in 1959. He averaged 17 points as a freshman and 21 points as a sophomore. He scored his career high 41 points versus Gardner-Webb and was Team Captain in 1959. Mickey was also a member of the Lions' golf team. Upon completion of service in the U.S. Army, he returned to Mars Hill and obtained his senior college degree (1965). Mickey is an active leader in community, church and business in the Asheville area.

Stacy Mark was a member of the Cross Country and Track & Field Teams from 1999-2002. She was a four-time First Team All-SAC selection in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Stacy was the SAC Runner of the Year in 2001 and 2002. She led her squad to South Atlantic Conference Titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Stacy was a Southeast Region Selection in 2000, 2001 and 2002; Southeast Region Runner of the Year in 2002; Led MHC to Southeast Region Championship and was a National Meet Participant in 2000 and 2002. In Track and Field, Stacy was a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection in 2002 and holds the school record in the 5000 meter cross country race. She was a National Qualifier in the 3000 meter Steeplechase and holds school records in the 1500 meter, 3000 meter and 5000 meter. Stacy also holds school records in the 2000 meter and 3000 meter Steeplechase. She was All-Conference in Track & Field in 2002 and 2003 and was the Track & Field Conference Runner of the Year in 2003 and the Track & Field Conference Freshman of the Year in 1999.

Denise Shelton was a guard for the women's basketball team from 1998-2002. She was the SAC Female Athlete of the Year in 2002 as well as being named a Kodak All-American and a Daktronics All-American in the same year. She was a Kodak Honorable Mention All-American in 2000. Denise was the SAC Player of the Year twice in 2000 and again in 2002. She was a All-South Atlantic Region pick in 2001 and 2002 and made the All-SAC team four straight years. Denise was tabbed the SAC Freshmen of the Year in 1999. In her senior campaign, Denise was named the SAC Tournament MVP and the NCAA South Atlantic Region Tournament MVP (2002). She still holds school records for most career points (2,162), most points in a single season (695), scoring average in a single season (22.4) and career scoring average (19.7). Denise was a team Co-Captain and helped lead her team to a SAC Tournament title, Southeast Region title and an Elite 8 appearance in 2002. Academically Denise was a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll all four years at Mars Hill.
