CHADRON - Western State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first six minutes and never trailed during a 72-58 victory over Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night in Chadron.
The Mountaineers, now 3-3 for the season and 1-1 in the conference, shot 44.4 percent from the field while building a 38-25 halftime lead. Chadron State whittled the difference to seven points in the first three minutes of the second half, but Western led by double digits most of the rest of the game.
Three players scored a bulk of the points for Western. Guard Nikki Trujillo tallied 18 while knocking down four of her team’s six 3-pointers. Michelle Dobbs added 16 points while making seven of nine of her field goal shots, including a pair of treys, and Katie Hall scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Western out-rebounded the Eagles 48-35.
Lexi Schmidt was Chadron State’s only double-figure scorer with 10. Both Kattie Ranta and Betsy Moler scored nine off the bench.
The Eagles played without standout Kaitlin Petri, who was withheld from action because of a recurrence of a leg problem. CSC also played most of the game without starter Marla Munsen, who fell early in the game and did not return to action.
CSC is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC. The Eagles will play their next four games in the Denver area.
