GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team fell to Colorado Christian in a closely contested game by a score of 70-67 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Lockridge Arena.
Mines led early by six points after a Brecca Gaffney layup at the 12:37 mark but the Cougars answered going on an 18-4 run over the next six minutes. Marissa Nelson gave the CCU an eight-point lead with 6:02 remaining in the first half. CCU would take a five point lead into the break.
CSM shot 54.2 percent in the first half but 15 first half turnovers led to 17 Cougar points off turnovers. CCU also attempted 42 shots in the half compared to just 24 by Mines.
The Cougars would push their lead to as many as 14 points in the second half. Mines quickly cut their deficit back to single digits after a pair of free throws by Courtney Gallo and a three pointer by Stephanie Fogle with 7:04 left in the game.
Down by 10 points with 3:56 remaining, CSM went on a 9-0 run capped off by a Fogle three pointer to pull within a point with 1:09 on the clock.
CCU came down the court on their next possession and turned the ball over on a shot clock violation giving Mines the ball and a chance to take the lead with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
The Orediggers had two looks from close in as Gaffney’s layup went in and out. Tory Langas collected an offensive rebound and was unable to convert underneath the basket.
Christina Whitelaw made a pair of free throws giving CCU a three-point lead. The Cougars fouled and Fogle made both free throws pulling Mines within one again.
Whitelaw once again converted two from the charity stripe and with four seconds remaining CSM looked to go the length of the court to make a game-tying three pointer.
On the in bounds, Katie Clements received the ball dribbled down the right side, pulled up from 20 feet and her shot went in and out as time expired.
CSM has lost two games this season by a total of six points while winning three other games by less than five points.
Fogle led the way for Mines with a career-high 20 points as she was 4-of-5 from the three point line and 7-of-13 from the field. Gaffney finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals for her third double-double of the season. Gallo scored in double figures for the second straight game as she added 12 points and four rebounds. Kait Soehner chipped in with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
CCU (2-2 overall, 1-0 RMAC) got 17 points, five assists and three steals from Whitelaw while Mallory Lowe added 13 points and eight boards. Kelsie Hert finished with 11 points while Bre McBeth chipped in with 10 points.
The Orediggers (4-2 overall, 0-1 RMAC) will play at UC-Colorado Springs on Friday, Dec. 10th at 6:00 pm. Mines will travel to play at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, Dec. 11th at 6:00 pm.
