RICHARDSON, TEXAS The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team had a trio of student-athletes earn Lone Star Conference postseason awards on Thursday night.
Senior libero Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) earned LSC First Team honors after being named Honorable Mention each of the past two years. She led the conference with 5.40 digs per set for the entire season and was also the league leader during conference play with 5.67 digs per set against LSC opponents. She is only the third player in school history to average over 5.00 digs per set for a season and finished her career with 1,619 digs. She is third in school history for career digs and is first in career digs per set, 4.23.
Freshman outside hitter Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) nabbed LSC Honorable Mention honors. She averaged 1.99 kills per set with a .196 attack. She added 66 digs and 26 blocks on the season.
Junior middle blocker Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) was named to the LSC All-Academic Team. The biology major holds a 3.91 grade point average while being one of the top players on the team. She averaged 2.12 kills and 0.68 blocks per set while posting a .269 attack. All those figures place her second on the team. She finished the year ninth in the conference in attack percentage.
The All-Academic team is chosen by the league's sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team's contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
