CHADRON - Mesa State overcame a 35-28 halftime deficit to defeat the Chadron State Eagles 66-62 in a women’s basketball game in Chadron on Friday night that opened play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for both teams.
The Mavericks tallied 10 of the first 11 points in the second half while wiping out CSC’s lead, and took the lead for keeps with 5:22 gone off the second half clock. The Mavericks increased their lead to as 10 points with 8:50 to play. The Eagles, though, cut the margin down to 65-62 with 17 seconds left on Lexi Schmidt’s 3-pointer, but couldn’t get closer.
Mesa State was led in scoring by 6-foot center Kelsey Sigl with 21 points. Sharaya Selsor added 14 points and her sister Katrina had 12. Katrina Selsor also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Chadron State also was paced by a sophomore, Lexi Smidt, who scored 19 points, 15 of them on 3-pointers. Senior Kaitlin Petri added 17 points and sophomore Marla Munsen finished with 11. Both Petri and Kelsey Scott collected eight rebounds for the Eagles.
Rebounding was one of the primary factors in the game. At halftime, Chadron State had a 27-14 bulge and had 14 second-chance points compared to just five for Mesa State. But in the second half, the Mavericks out-rebounded the Eagles 21-15 and outscored CSC 11-5 after grabbing offensive rebounds.
Mesa State shot 39.3 percent from the field and CSC 35.2 percent. Thirty-one of the Eagles’ 54 shots were 3-pointers. They made nine of the long-range attempts.
Mesa State is now 4-1 overall. CSC is 1-3. The Eagles will host Western State tonight; Mesa State will visit Nebraska-Kearney.
