Bobcats Trample Trojans 72-52, Smith Gets First Collegiate Win

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Maurice Smith era started with an explosive offensive performance by Georgia College (1-0) as they trampled the Anderson Trojans (0-1) Friday night 72-52. Chimere Jordan (Gray, Ga.) led all scorers with 35 points, a career high for the senior guard.

Jordan’s 35 points ties for fifth in single-game program history.

Georgia College never gave up the lead after junior Ashleigh Fox (Lilburn, Ga.) hit a three-pointer to put the Bobcats up 23-22 with 1:46 left in the first half. Fox finished with five points and two steals.

The Bobcats came out firing in the second half, as nine of their first 11 points came off three three-pointers to extend the lead to 36-26. Jordan scored 29 second-half points as Georgia College poured it on out-scoring Anderson 47-30 and leading by as many as 23.

Jordan also had a team-high eight rebounds and four assists while dishing out two dimes.

Freshmen Abby Slocumb (Suwanee, Ga.) and Krysta Lewis (Woodstock, Ga.) and senior Dominique Huffin (Tucker, Ga.) each contributed eight points to the scoring efforts. Huffin added eight rebounds with seven on the defensive glass, Slocumb had six boards and Lewis grabbed five boards.

Despite hitting 8-of-28 (.286) from the floor, GC led 25-22 at the half as Lewis had eight first half points. Georgia College was hot from the free-throw line hitting 7-of-7 in the first 20 minutes of action.

Anderson had five different players hit at least one three-pointer in the first half. Ashely Abed led the Trojans with 10 points. Alexa Neal had a team-best eight boards, all defensive.

GC outscored the Trojans 16-10 in the paint, winning the rebound battle 40-35. The ‘Cats finished the game hitting 26-of-61 (.426) from the floor, 5-of-17 (.294) behind three-point land and 15-of-17 (.882) from the free-throw line.

The Bobcats are back in action at the Centennial Center Wednesday, Nov. 17 to face USC Aiken in a non-conference matchup at 5:30 p.m., the first home game of the 2010-11 campaign.
